I have a student who plays on an E12F, SN1171253. She's been playing sharp - it isn't a new problem, but has recently become more of an issue at school. I wanted to try longer barrels as a first attempt at a solution. I have a dozen barrels in my desk drawer. They all fit my Selmer 10Gs, but most are explicitly meant for Buffet. Several Chaddash, a couple of Moennig, 3 or 4 Fobes and a few Backun barrels of various lengths.
Her barrel, which came with the clarinet, is 65mm, so a 66mm barrel might bring it up to pitch. I only tried barrels 66mm or longer, but not one of them fitted the tenon on her E12. All too tight - some wouldn't go on at all, some just dangerously tight so I was afraid to push them all the way in.
My question: are the tenons on these E12Fs all so non-standard, or has hers somehow swollen over the three or four years she's had it? If they're all that large, who sells barrels for them?
Thanks.

Maybe she could have a tech cut down the upper joint tenon so standard Buffet barrels will fit? Then she could try as many barrels as possible to get the intonation and sound just right.

That's certainly a possibility if barrels aren't available. I measured the entrance bore on her clarinet and it's larger than on my 10G or my very aged R13. Assuming the bore hasn't opened significantly, I'm not sure a normal-bored barrel meant for an R-13 or higher Buffet model would tune as well as one designed to lead into the E12F bore. Maybe some of the more experienced techs on the board would know.

Karl,
You have probably already considered a mouthpiece replacement as a solution to the sharpness problem. I’m wondering why you believe that this would not help enough.
I have no experience with the E12F.

We've already tried it.

E12Fs, like E11s, are designed to tune to a-442.
A longer barrel should resolve the issue.
A 13 series Vandoren mouthpiece would also help pull the pitch down.
The tenons on buffet clarinets have been problems for years, I have no specific knowledge of E12F's, but I'd probably start with sanding down the tenon a bit to match standard Buffet barrels. Or perhaps sand the barrels down a tad, you can always put on thicker cork.

Just an alert that tenons should not be sanded down! You will end up rounding off the edges. Reducing the tenon should be carried out by a good technician who will use the appropriate tool.
