 Clarinet R13
Author: Jacob R
Date:   2023-07-13 08:49

So, I bought an R13 off of Ebay, and I was wondering if it is legit or anything because I got it for 1.2k USD and it seems and looks legit, but I am not a professional clarinet inspector, so I came here to get some knowledge about it. It is in VERY good condition from what it seems, but just wondering if it is an authentic BC R13. SS #205xxx on both joints.

The serial number search in Buffet Crampon's website (https://www.buffet-crampon.com/en/serial-number-search/) is broken for some time, it seems.

You can only check manually in places like https://www.adams-music.com/en/repair_and_maintenance/serial_numbers/buffet_crampon. That shows 205 XXX being produced in 1980, but it can't check if your R13 is legit or not.

It looks legit though.

Also looks like you got silver plated keys rather than nickel.....another plus (in my book).

That's a really old case, perhaps around the time Buffet started making silver plated keyed horns again (late 70's?).

Still, have a tech check for leaks and things to make sure it is FUNCTIONING correctly.

I guess that depends on your definition of "really old". My new R13 from the mid 90s came in that case and I remember new Buffets with that case for quite a few years after that. I don't consider that very old. Other than being pretty small it's not a great case. The latches often stop working to the point it can suddenly open and the bell buldge makes it annoying to fit over/under/between things. I would definitely use the case cover or (what I've done for years) carry it in a backpack.

Maybe I missed an "era" but this case features a clearly very worn leather handle of a type not found on a case past the 70's. Also there is a built in loop to hold a screw driver that was probably provided by Buffet. When was the last time (besides Wurlitzer horns) you saw a manufacturer provide a proper micro screw driver? Definitely not 90's.

My noblet eb case has a loop like that in the case but it had a stick in it instead of a screwdriver. I think it is for pushing swabs through the bore instead of using a pull through style with a string.

I also bought a 2nd hand R13 from a real music. Judging from the serial #, this was a golden age model. IT’s potential was not realized until it was totally overhauled. I furthered it with Icon barrel and bell. An adjustable thumb rest was added but subsequently replaced. So from a $1300 clarinet with over $1000 in upgrades, I am good with it.

I'm sure the loop is for the pullthrough. The pullthrough I use on my old B&H Imperial Eb also has a "stick" in the end of the tape instead of the usual weight, so I can push it in until it drops ino the instrument and out of the bell in the conventional manner. The case has the loop which the "stick" fits nicely.
There must be a technical word for the "stick"...
