The obsession with sound ...such sweet madness!

Well!....to begin with, I'm not really saying that the typical musician's obsession with the sound qualities of their instruments is a madness. If it is,then it's part of the madness of why we love music at all, which is something for which we would have great difficulty in explaining rationally to any curious visiting aliens from outer space and probably should't try .

No!...my angle on this derives from a discussion that took place on an acoustic guitar forum I'm in, which is no different than this one inasmuch as there is a great deal of debate over strings , saddle and nut materials and guitar brands, materials, sizes and shapes etc....but above all a lot of minutia ( often quite expensive minutia).

This particular discussion was about the relative gram-like influences of this or that on sound quality, weighed agains the list of factors which tend to stand between the sound as heard by the musican and the ear of an audience. Sound recording influences, live venue acoustics influences, audience distance influences and also just the fact that someone sitting, listening in front of you, will not be hearing what you are as the player .

In view of these facts , there seemed to emerge a general confession/admittance among the acoustic guitarists, that the obsession with grams of sound quality was really about the musicians personal relationship with the instrument , given that the real world influences on sound for the ears of an audience tended to be influenced to the sum of Kilos (so to speak). Perhaps we like to presume a greater objective in our focus on sound minutia than self gratification ......but why should we? When all is said and done , a musician is like a spring doing its very best to produce the purest waters it can....job done ! and what the ground onto which it runs does with it is largey beside the point .

Any thoughts and sentiments out there on this angle ?
