I"m buying a new Buffet Bass clarinet(low C) and I'm looking for mouthpiece options. I have played a Hawkins mouthpiece, portnoy, Bay.....but what are some other good quality options that are out there for the Bass......

I hear Pyne mouthpieces are good. But you might want a more open mouthpiece to counter the extreme darkness of the Buffet Prestige Bass clarinets(the ones to low C).

I use a Hite mouthpiece, and that works really well for me. My friend has a Buffet Prestige bass and he uses the Hite as well.

Selmer C*'s are nice and not ridiculously expensive. Get in touch with International Musical Supplier and have Lisa try some out for you and have her send you the best ones for your own auditioning.

Fred,

We (clarinetists) could all recommend what works best for us individually, and miss the mark for you by a long shot. I use a Clark Fobes bass mouthpiece and am very happy with the performance.

There are many very good options for bass clarinet mouthpieces available currently.

You should find a good music store or internet site and get busy "auditioning" mouthpieces. Get together a good selection of reeds and bring a clarinet playing friend or your clarinet instructor to lend a second ear. This process takes some time and a little money but well worth both. If/when you find a great mouthpiece you won't be buying another bass mouthpiece for many years.

Have fun,

F. Aten

I have been happy with an older Selmer C* and a similar Bundy 3 for my Selmer 31-33, and believe that any "mismatching" of bore sizes is negligable, a point to consider! Someone [Ken Shaw? or on bass-clarinet@yahoogroups.com?] has said that the newer C*s are very good as "blanks" for pro refacings. I plan on trying that approach shortly. Luck, Don

I use a very open (.100" tip) Bay on my low C Selmer. It's blows pretty freely and can produce a tremendous sound. This piece suits me well as I like to play jazz as well as classical. For someone who plays classical only a smaller tip piece (say .075"-.080") would be preferable as it's easier to get a darker tone with a smaller piece. My clarion register starts to sound a little like a tenor sax when I play loud, but this is okay for jazz. Charlie's pieces are pricy (around $300) and I hear there's about a one year wait.

Well, I like the Vandoren B44. It plays nice for me, and isn't too expensive (on an early 1950's low Eb Buffet). Regards,

Mike B.
