Earlier this year I asked this bulletin board's opinion about rebuilding a 100 year old Buffet. What a wonderful group you are! The technician gave me a suggested price of $600 because one or two keys would also need rebuilding. It seemed a bit much, but I went ahead with the project.
Well, it just came out of the shop and it is beautiful! Several clerks in the store commented on the struggle the tech had with adjustments, but they said the look on his face when he played it made it all worth while. When I got home, I found they were right. It plays in tune, the tone is sweet and clear, And the bill came in under $400!
Thanks to all of you who responded. Are there others of you who play the "old" Buffets?

Glad you're pleased, John :]
I have an 'old' Buffet (not as old as yours) - but I don't play it. If I ever decide to take up the Boehm system seriously, that kind of horn would be my preference. I used it as an instrument to 'train' myself on (to repair horns). It actually belongs to a shop owner/tech who loaned it to me because it was the worstest thing he could find at the time for my purpose. I didn't have to make any keys for it but I got a lot of swedging practice. I haven't returned it yet because I still have a little more to do. I have to admit though, that it plays beautifully and feels very nice now. Them ol' horns is worth the effort to fix 'em up if, as you're aware, you have the time - and/or money to invest. It's too bad some of them wind up in such a deteriorated state, but they do. And sometimes someone is deleriously happy with the result of a competent restoration. It's thanks to you, John, that you had the insight, the 'sixth sense', a feeling for it that others must have missed and it proved out you were right about it all along. What a wonderful story.

Yes, there are lots of "old-Buffet" lovers out here in cl land!, myself included. I surrendered my symp. 2nd cl seat to a good friend [and a better clist!] who plays a VG 1900's Buff with wrap-around RK as best, who recently bought a pair of 1920's, a 17/6 and a Full Boehm via EBAY. He asked me to get them into playing condition before a pro-overhaul, which I did , both Ok to me!, except for the artic. C#/G# on the FB. I took it apart, [what a miserable mechanism!!!, I have 4 cls with it, its a diff. structure than they have!! ], I gave up and took it to Tulsa, for hot oil treat. and complete overhaul. It appears to have them stymied also, so please ask your repair-person if he/she found a "different-type" of mech. on yours, and might like another one to finish up?? You can E-M me if you wish, just wanted to talk to all about it. Regards, Don
