That's a Master Model. Handmade. My teacher has one of those and it plays wonderfully. I don't know about what it would cost though.

Maybe it's a new policy: Ebay gets 20% of the final bid as a "tax" instead of that measley quarter or however much it is, so they naturally want more for it. Hey, that sounds like something they'd do. Or maybe I'm just too tired from band camp to care. I agree, it's way too much.

Have you noticed that the shipping and handling rates often are flat rate from $10 up now instead of based on your location?
Reserve amounts seem to be increasing too. Well, why not? - nearly everything's vintage or a collectible.
I don't know about other folks but a thousand bucks for a used clarinet seems laughably steep to me no matter who made it or how they did it.

This was Buffet's high end intermediate model, the forerunner to the E13. According to the Boosey & Hawkes serial number finder, it was made in the year 0. ;^) By extrapolation (or is that interpolation) my guess would be 1952 or 53. Depending on who you believe, that would place it prior to Buffet's introduction of the polycylindrical bore. The seller doesn't have a clue as to its value or how to price it on eBay. I seriously doubt it will draw a bid. I don't think the "master model" designation means much on E&S K-series instruments with a serial number this low. I cannot remember a single E&S with a K-serial number under 10,000 that wasn't a master model and there have been quite a few on eBay over the last few years.

The under 10,000 series Master models play on the dull side.

The Dxx,xxx series from the 70's can be surprisingly good.

Why on Earth would anyone shopping spend this kind of money when new horns are available at the price?

I suppose it's like fishing; if you keep the bait out long enough, something will bite.

(I think we know what really bite, here.)

Anyone that wants a Master Model for this kinda bread can call me, I gots 2!

Well, nobody in their right mind is gonna pay that money. This is just another care of an ill-advised, ill-informed or WISHFUL eBay Seller. It's a $200 to $500 horn, max. (NOW, the $500 doesn't mean you can't love it. You can!) Best, mw

Well, I agree this is not a good deal. However, most eBay sellers (such as myself and mw and others) will tell you that eBay has increased some of their fees. Yet, it is still an inexpensive way to sell stuff online.

And, for shipping charges---I've had to pay a ton more lately because of the fuel "surcharge" due to the latest "energy crisis." In more than one instance it cost me more to ship than I got from the buyer and I'm too nice to ask for more once I've made a deal. Tends to make people not trust you. One buyer didn't tell me he was in Alaska, just in the U.S. and I didn't think to be specific when I gave him an estimate and I lost $50.00 on shipping for that one. (it was a guitar). Yes, the zip code should have taken care of it, however---the UPS website failed to give me the information that that particular zip code had to be sent by air and thus would be more--plus the surcharge. I did discuss this with the UPS people, but they just shrugged and said, "Gee, we're sorry the website makes mistakes."

Ok. So do I.

Anyway, I've learned to get the exact information. And, I have much less stuff on eBay now.

Thanks for clarifying somewhat the shipping rate increases. I never heard of a website making mistakes though. Isn't it the people running the websites who...
I know, I'll sit down now. But, yeah... we all make mistakes :

Thanks for making sure people understand a $500 clarinet can be well loved... Not too long ago, I bought a used Yamaha YCL-72 for 450 (plus tax) and I love it!

Ron, apparently the information entered into the UPS site concerning the specific zone in Alaska was in error. I did complain and they said they would "check it out." Hopefully they've gotten it fixed. But, I've been burned so many times on shipping and eBay fees that it isn't funny. Also, I just got a notice from PayPal this morning that they're going to start taking $2.90 out of every payment plus a % for things over a certain amount. Well, if I only make a couple of dollars on a mouthpiece and someone pays by PayPal, I'm already in the hole. So, I only have one choice--to go up on the basic price of stuff I sell or stop selling on eBay altogether.

.... ANY clarinet can be loved. We have rather close relationships with our horns, don't we?

???? I'm a PayPal member and I pay 2.9% (because I'm a low dollar merchant) + 30cents. I just checked the site and nowhere does it say $2.90. Perhaps for auctions only???

Well, I mean for "sellers." Maybe it was 2.9%. I'll check it out again. I'm not much on math and numbers. I can never remember them. It still is an increase over what they used to take out of payments to me. And, like I said, if I pay $13.00 for a mouthpiece I'm listing for $15.95--I can't really afford to sell it with PayPal and break even.

2.9% +.30 is still too high in my opinion. My regular merchant account is only 2.25% plus .25 for each transaction for phone and internet business. It's only 1.53% for swiped cards. Discover is even less percentage wise because I pay them a flat fee each month to get a lesser discount rate: 1%. I gambled that I would come out less with the 1% plus a higher fee each month. So far it's turned out about the same. I would prefer customers to let me phone them for their CC information, but some insist on using PayPal. I guess it is easier for them, but once added on to eBay fees, then as Brenda says, you sometimes sell and only break even or worse!

Life would be nicer if it weren't so high, but Internet CC charges are (in most cases) significantly higher than 2.9%. I use PayPal because the setup fee for a Merchant account et al. would be far in excess of any savings I would get.

Volume sellers at Paypal (over $1,000 per month) pay 2.2% + .30 per trans. Failure to keep the $1000 for 3 consecutive months boots you back to the 2.9%.

I was just browsing eBay a while ago and saw a horn, at the top of second page now, with the seller stating in the description, 'be aware of high shipping rates and long delays'.
Well, there we are. The more we age the more everything costs :

Brenda, there was an error at Paypal and they sent many Seller/members the email notice you mentioned. However, since I got that email too, if you re-read it it says "2.9% + .30 a transaction", not $2,90.

Jim, the Dxxxxx master models are Evette Master Models, not Evette and Schaeffer. As near as I can tell, the Evette became the E11 when buffet changed the designations around 1982. The Evette Master Model became the E12 and the Evette & Schaeffer became the E13. I'm not sure what distinguishes a high-K serial number Evette & Schaeffer Master Model from a high-K serial number Evette & Schaeffer, but both exist. Their keywork is virtually identical but (subtly) different from an R13.

It gets more comlicated. I have a Dxxxx Evette which is fantastic. I bought it new in 1969. It has the Buffet logo and says Evette. I have been told it is a Master model not an Evette. In any event the Dxxxx Evette's can play as well as any top line professional horn but will command a price $500 or less. This guy with a tag of $1,475 is just dreaming. If it does sell that means my Evette is really worth about $2000 then, and my R-13 should pull $5000!

Yes, I just got another notice from PayPal that they had made a mistake when they sent me that notice about the 2.9% plus .30 per transaction rate (Yes, mw and Mark C., you are right--I misread it) and have put me back to the 2.2% plus .30 per transaction.

But, since I've dropped my volume drastically in the last two months, I'll only have one month before it goes back to the standard 2.9% plus .30 rate.

Anyway, yes that is better than most credit card companies charge for credit card sales, but still--it takes a huge hit out of a small profit item.

I'm not buying new merchandise for sale anymore. So, I'll be a low volume dealer except for a few things from time to time.

Buffet used D-serial numbers on Evettes made between 1963 and 1977. These seem to be the most desirable wooden Evettes. As I recall, it was in 1978 (or possibly 1977) that Buffet moved production of the Evette to Germany. A serial numbering change could have occurred then. The limited evidence I have indicates that Evette Master Models were numbered right along with standard Evettes but were stamped "Master Model" below the Evette logo, at least on the upper joint and possibly elsewhere at different points in time. (I have one that dates from 1976 and is stamped only on the upper joint.) What Buffet's basis/criterion was for awarding this designation beats me. I reconditioned an Evette (not master model) from 1963 for my daughter to use at school so she wouldn't have to lug a clarinet back and forth every day. Her "home" instrument was an early E11. I always thought the Evette was the better built horn but my daughter's teacher, a FAR better clarinetist than I, preferred the E11.

The E-11 is a very good stepup clarinet. It's propensity towards sharp readings on the Tuner can, at times be dealt with effectively with a Barrel change. The problem is being able to ZERO in conditions so that comparison and solutions are apples to apples, as opposed to oranges.
