i have been receiving "Clarinet phone numbersa" in my email and I can't block it. Has anyone else been receiving it and have any idea who or what this is about. i can't even open up the mail.

I'm about as cyber-illiterate as anyone can get but I think you probably shouldn't try opening anything these days if you don't know the sender. Sounds like something you should delete and delete and delete until it stops bothering you. Any idea why you can't block it? That's odd.

i do delete it, however I get them 3 or 4 times a day and they take forever to download. bummer

We use a program called phoenix mail, a free ware, share ware mail reader. I can elect to not download email. It reads text only so viruses are hard to get...
I would consider getting a mail reader, or setting on one that only downloads the items you wish to read.

Hey Bob,
If you're using Outlook, you should be able to 'Add to Junk Senders list'.
The Yahoo page has a limited capacity for blocks, but recognizes wide delivery lists as potential spam and earmarks the message.
Have you replied to the sender with "REMOVE" in the subject header?
Makes ya wonda who soldjer name, dunnit?

I just delete them, and yes, I've been getting tons of junk mail lately from sources unknown to me. I don't try to download them or save them--just delete them. Do what Anji advises and send them to junk mail.
Don't want any "red worms" or weird stuff creeping around our computers, do we?
By the way--have fun in N.O. and be nice to Mark C.

DON'T DO THAT! That ploy determines that it's a valid account and you'll get even more junk mail!

Mark C. is right. Best to trash them or block them. Of course, my "block" column is totally filled up. I don't know who to delete--they just start sending garbage again.

If you use Netscape Mail (and possibly Microsoft Outlook), you can set up a folder for "junk" and then set up the parameters, so that anything coming in from a particular source, or with a particular topic goes straight to that folder (or, I think, you can set it up to go straight to trash).
That way you don't have to actually look at the emails, and you can delete them directly.

The most annoying spammers are the ones wo keep changing their names for each new round of spam, they also keep getting new free e-mail addresses (i.e. hotmail or AOL accounts). They do this for one reason only, they know you probably block them each time and they need to find a way to continue annoying you.
I help out on another website and we found these scoundrels were lifting e-mail addresses from the bulletin board posts. In fact they seem to have programs which they sic on every bulletin board they can find just to pull names down.... these folks are not only annoying they wouldn't be caught dead actually buying a list, they steal it!
On the other board I mentioned folks are taking to inserting their e-mail address adulterated. I.e. my email is horlick@jps.net and it would become something like horlick@nospam.jps.net. The then usually insert the correct e-mail in the text or a note to remove the "nospam" before mailing. Folks on that board say it has cut down on junk mail relating to that board's topic. I haven't received clarinet related spam yet, so I question the hint that this board may have been harvested.
It would be interesting to get one of these free mail accounts with an alias and make one post on a suspect bboard. Then sit back and see how long it takes to start being spammed.

Can I suggest two pieces of really good software that take care of this problem. One is called "Easy Notification," and the other is Avirmail. They will give you a list of the headings of messages in your email box, without actually downloading the messages. You can, if you wish, take a look at what is in a message, again without downloading it. You delete the messages you don't want on the server. Then you need only download the messages you actually want to receive using your regular email client. The two programs are both freeware, and you should be able to find them easily using any decent search machine. I use Easy Notification myself, because it enables me to select and delete whole blocks of email at a time, whereas Avirmail requires you to define the messages you want to delete one by one. But it has a better look, and lots of good features.
