 Buffet bass clarinet neck
Author: Lee Ruby

Does anyone know if a modern Buffet neck will work on a Buffet "Professional" model from the mid '60s? If not, can someone recommend a suitable replacement?
Thanks

Unfortunately no. The Professional has a very small 23.1mm bore and the modern Prestige neck is designed for an instrument with a 23.5mm bore. Even the Tosca neck is too big. The result will be an extremely sharp upper clarion register.

Unfortunately there is no direct replacement, you will need to work with a neck manufacturer to have a custom neck made.

Also to add, modern necks are longer to the point where they can not be brought up to 440. I just performed a COA on a lovely 1960s Professional which is how I know all of this. I was hoping to make my ICON work on the Professional with no luck...

I can't speak for the "Professional" Model, but my 1935 Buffet bass (with register mechanism very similar to the modern Prestige Bass) works "OK" with an adapted modern neck (with steep angle).
The register key link had to have an extra bit soldiered on as it was not as far reaching as the original one... but other than that it fits and works fine.
The intonation on the bass is SLIGHTLY worse than before, basically the same problems are just slightly amplified (a couple of flat notes are a touch worse, but only by a small margin), but there are "work arounds", and I find the steeper neck angle makes it worth this slight annoyance.
When I use a modern bass I don't find the intonation to be perfect- more or less the same problems exist as on the older one.

Worth checking with Gloger. He can make pretty much anything and prices are competitive with new stock necks.
