 Help me choose.

I am a 71 years old beginner student of flute, and I'd like to buy my first clarinet. but I have a limited budget.
What would you choose between a brand new Jean Paul clarinet, made in China but apparently of decent quality, and an old Yamaha YS26 completely refurbished and cleaned by a professional? The Jean Paul is sold for $249.00. The Yamaha that I mentioned is sold on E Bay for around 240.00 and shows pictures of the clarinet taken apart for refurbishing. Thank you for your opinion.

Yamaha without question.

A student of mine had one of those new, inexpensive Chinese clarinets and it was always in disrepair. His parents had to buy another clarinet within a year.

The Yamaha, especially if it has been refurbished.

Yamaha from me too, and I hope you enjoy it. Sounds like a wonderful plan.

The Yamaha YAS-26 is an Alto Sax. You probably meant the YCL-20 or YCL-255.

I did look up the Jean Paul instrument website and at least they are doing it right with Chinese manufacturing by doing adjustments as they come in to their Miami facility.

That being said, the history of reliability and durability is on Yamaha's side with probably no real upside to the Jean Paul clarinet other than it being never used.

Getting back into playing after 20 years.

If buying off eBay, you need to consider who is selling.
Is that a repair shop or a private person?
What is their feedback and did they sell any musical instruments before?

Even if the feedback is 100%, you still may get a clarinet that would need an adjustment (or two).
However, the new chines-made instrument may need adjustments as well.

If you do not play, then maybe find someone who will check an instrument for you.

My advice would be to check local repair shops and/or musical instruments stores that have repair service, and see if anyone has an instrument in your price range.

Repair shops and instrument techs I know HATE working on ANY brand of Chinese made clarinet.

The Yamaha as long as it is in good condition. Chinese made clarinets vary enormously in quality, and while there are good one there are far more bad ones. The Chinese manufacturing technology is improving but they do not seem to have grasped the concept of tuning.

Yamaha. but when buying any new or used horn, I would still take it to a tech I trust, to check it for leaks and mechanical issues. budget for that.
