Hi Kilo,
You should start a topic on the Royal MAX !.... I for one am very curios to hear people's opinions about it . I suspect that models like this one, may go a long way to dispeling such ideas as 'the inability of the Chinese to produce real quality' and also 'the inferiority in sound quality of composites vs. wood' . Of course ,Tom R has been challenging that notion for years ( and with quite some success ....at least for those willing to listen!). As I understand it ,in the building of string instruments , the sound attributes of tone-wood are definitly an issue . In woodwind building, the primary issue is basically not using a wood that will split like a carrot . That that wood just happens to offer appreciable tonal qualities is a happy accident . Hence I think that it's more probable that other materials can be used to offer equivalent sound quality . The only true tone-wood used in building some woodwinds that I'm aware of, is Rosewood . That is....'Tone-wood' as a frequency emitter, not a low resistance frequency conductor such as Ebony for fretboards . The high density woods like Grenadilla are frequency conductors . In a clarinet , it's like the gold-plated cable to a loud speaker that isn't really there .
( I'm sure that that opraisal will annoy a lot of people....well!...just my opinion based on the laws of physics.)
Hi Hangardude
I'm not really sure what your point is . I merely thought to offer something of a review update on the 925c as it comes TODAY . Like you say, Dave's review was 11 years ago . I stuck to the mechanical side because that's all I feel I have any authority to talk about and because it appears to be the one side of this bass which has seemingly had issues judging from passed opinion. I rather doubt that today's 925c is much different from that of Dave's review however . The overly heavy action of the low D pinky lever has not been re- engineered , and the low D rod still bows up in the guide, which is something it would have been easy to correct . I still think this is a pretty decent instrument however, as it does have Tom's design mastery in its sound performance ( I have great respect for the man ),but I don't think that he's focused on improving its lingering mechanical shortcomings , unlike his other horn models , most of which have achieved real excellence and are more affordable to musicians .
Reading people's reviews of this bass starting from its launch , is like reading the tale of ' The Ugly Duckling " . It's just missing those last couple of pages where the swan spreads its glorious wings and only Tom can write that .
