Another eBay question... alto vs. bass
Author: C. Hogue

Check out this listing:

Now this looks like an alto clarinet to me. I've emailed the seller with this info and asked how long the two black parts of the horn are when assembled. No response for three days. What do you think?

The neck is angled like an alto. A bass neck is shaped more like the "P" trap under the sink. One of those bidders is gonna be awfully disappointed when they open that package.

Willie -- That's what I thought too.

I'd sure use my eBay insurance on that one, if I was the high bidder & didn't know better.

Query re:Neck. Didn't Leblanc use a modified neck, somewhat like a Bay on ocassion? Could this be a Bass with a modified neck. What is the length?

Please ... nobody ... don't plan on using eBay's $200 insurance. It will take you so long to collect and you'll spend so much time perfecting your Claim, that you would have paid to avoid the experience. I recommend a hypnotist instead who can banish the evil thought demonds from your body after a bad experience. Best, mw

The Bay neck (wish I had one) is even more "S" shaped to get the mouthpiece at a more upward angle the stock necks. The stock neck looks almost like the P trap drain under the kitchen sink making the mouthpiece too horrizontal. The alto (and I think some basset horns) have only about a 45 degree bend in the middle and much shorter.

It looks like an alto and Leblanc altos are junk. I wouldn't pay a nickel for this horn.

Why does it look rusted?

Why does it look rusted? Maybe it's been used in a "Heavy Metal" band?

It's an alto. And I don't care for Leblanc altos either.

They've finally corrected the listing. I wonder if the high bidder will finish the transaction now that the description is changed from bass to alto.

Anyway I'm glad they finally saidi t was an alto, but Bob said, yet Leblanc did have a modified neck, which was more bent than like a swan. I remember how whenever the band wanted me to play Bass Clarinet I always tried to make sure I didn't get one with one of those necks..... because they were horrible.
