 Bartok Contrasts
Author: Megan
Date:   2001-07-28 21:47

Some friends and I just performed the Bartok Contrasts on my senior recital. We put many hours of work into it and it went well. We are doing it again for a chamber recital in a few months. What we're looking for is a good recording of the piece. We only have the one with Benny Goodman, which is not great. Any suggestions of recordings would be greatly appreciated! Thanks -

Megan

I have two other recordings of it. One is with Hungarian clarinetist Kalman Berkes on the Hungaroton label. The other is with David Shifrin on Nonesuch. Both are excellent recordings. I'm sure there are others listed on Sneezy's database as well.

Yes I agree. There is a lot to learn from the Goodman recording, I think. I have never heard the opening movement come close to the sort of folky, swaggering flair that Benny gives us. Much of the recording is not technically perfect but Bartok doesn't seem to mind, and neither do I. The piece needs a real brashness, I think, and compared to my other way too slick recording (Walter Boekens, Robert Groslot) the Goodman/Szigeti/Bartok combo easily takes the cake.

i have a recording of Michael Collins, Martha Argerich, and Chantal Juillet (Saratoga Chamber Music) performing the Contrasts. It's really good. The UPC on the back of the CD is 724355681621 (maybe that will help you find it). It also has a Prokofiev's Quintet Op. 39 on it which is really great, it sounds like a soundtrack for a spooky haunted forest.
