 Need help with an Audition.

Hello! I am looking to audition for a well-established concert band in my region. This band is regularly seen at All Japan Band Competition, so I will need to be at my best to be considered.

The problem is, there is no audition material; All I have to do is to play something (by something, I mean anything) for about a minute. I have never had an audition without any materials, and honestly I am experiencing a choice paralysis. I wanted to ask you, fellow clarinetist, how would YOU go about this audition.

Should I play a technical excerpt?
Should I play a slow, expressive excerpt?
Should I play an excerpt from a famous piece?
Or pick some obscure excerpt from any method book?
Do's and Don'ts? Things to avoid?
What would you play?

Any help and tips would be appreciated.

Try to find past band literature, maybe the most difficult clarinet parts, and maybe some with clarinet solos.
Sounds like hit or miss, but all auditionees have the same dilemma, so if you were the judge, what would you like to hear?

Choose music to show your strengths.

Good Luck, and let us know the results.

A suggestion to play is two excerpts from Holst's 2nd suite solo clarinet part. You can get it for free from imslp.org. 30 seconds from the first movement will show technical playing, and the opening solo in the 2nd movement shows lyrical ability. Every band conductor will be familiar with those parts and how they should sound though, so that may be undesirable for you.

I think auditions like that just want an expressive example of playing and a technical one. They may ask for scales and present some sight reading. I would go with a slow etude and a fast etude (that you play WELL). Or, play some of the material from a Weber Concerto or the Concertino.

I'll just offer this link for my local Riverside City College wind ensemble site. They require auditions. At this link is a box.com link for audition music for various instruments.

One of the parts is the clarinet solo for Shostakovich's Festive Overture. I can't recognize the rest of them even though I probably should.

Anyway, there's a link that you may find useful.

Getting back into playing after 20 years.
Ridenour AureA Bb clarinet
Ridenour Homage mouthpiece
Rovner Versa ligature
Vandoren V12 #3 - #3.5 reeds

The 2nd excerpt is Grainger: "Molly on the shore".

But here is where I'd reiterate that you want to use material YOU KNOW if there is no designated material to learn. The point of an audition is to hear the best the candidate has to offer musically and technically. So go in with your "A game."
