Major service & restoration in UK?
Author: Morrigan

Hi everyone long time no see!

I’m after recommendations for somewhere in the UK that can do a major service on my R13 Bb & A. They’re about 20 years old, still play fantastically (thus I don’t want to replace them!). I’d like them stripped, polished, tone holes redressed if required, then put back together with all new pads, key tension regulated, the whole thing!

There are some great options in the US & Europe but thanks to Brexit this isn’t an option as I’d pay extortionate tax on their return.

Thanks all!

Hi,

I've used three different repairers in the UK. From my experience, Top Joint in Norwich is great if you want something done really quickly (like tomorrow), Woodwind and Reed in Cambridge are good all round, and if you want a really perfect seal on the pads of the instrument then David Fingerhut is great. WWR have a waiting list of a few weeks usually, and David Fingerhut more like a couple of months.

I haven't actually asked at WWR if they can do the kind of really careful service that David Fingerhut does. It may be that they can, but I didn't ask.

These are the links:

Given what you describe it would be worth looking at Eddie Ashton’s “superpad” service and Andrew Roberts Clarinet Service, both of whom specialise in returning fully airtight and properly regulated instruments.

I second the recommendation for David Fingerhut - used him for many years and he's worth a bit of a wait.

Richard Mattingley is very good. I would also consider Dawkes.

I believe that Chris P. (one of the contributors of this board) would be the right person to fix your instruments.

I base my opinion on the advice Chris gave to multiple posters in his replies as well as pictures of his work he posted.

You can search for his posts and form your own opinion.

BTW, I am not in any way associated with Chris P. He is in the UK, I am not.
But I did use repair advice from his posts, since I do minor repairs/restoration myself.

Thanks for the recommendation, m1964.

It's also nice to have been completely overlooked by others that have replied here - very much appreciated.

It makes the past twenty plus years offering my time, advice, sharing my experiences and repair techniques on this forum all the more worthwhile.

Hi Chris,
Where do you source your pads?
Here, in the US, synthetic and leather pads can be found but are expensive.

Thank you.

Hi Chris P,

Sorry about that. I've been reading your posts for years and had totally failed to realise that you were in the UK.

Do you have a website that we could look at, and that you could maybe put as a footer on your BBoard posts, so the penny drops for people?

Howarth's has some excellent repair people based in Worthing. They can even do re-plating if need be - I think they actually send the bits to France to have that done.

There's Chris Peryagh, based in West Sussex and long term contributor to this messageboard as he 's got over three decades of experience specialising in oboe, clarinet and sax repairs from servicing to full overhauls and keywork alterations, used to work for Howarth as an oboe finisher for over a decade, so I reckon he knows his stuff.

You'll find him on Facebook if you look up Chris Peryagh, so send him a message. He's not hard to find considering he's the only person in the world with that name and he posts photos of instruments he's overhauled and done keywork and other alterations to on his page.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for posting the link.

I did look at your facebook page, but I wouldn't realise from looking at it that you were someone I could come to for clarinet fixing.

I wonder if it might be worth you getting a webpage that is more specific about what you do, and then putting the link in as a footer on your posts on the BBoard?

It seems a shame to have you there ready to help us all out, and for us not to have realised.

I can write html, and would be very glad to whittle up a simple webpage for you if that would help. I think Mark Charette might be willing to host if for you on his server that he mentioned recently.

Just a thought anyway.

Thanks Chris, I’ve messaged you on FB so check your message requests if it doesn’t go straight to your inbox. I also have a very unique name so you’ll definitely notice it!
