 Help identify this clarinet
Author: JamieKate
Date:   2022-09-21 04:25

Years ago I bought a used Clarinet off eBay. It is marked as a Selmer Paris 10G series but I cannot find any serial number. I’m trying to decide if it’s safe to pass on to my 6th grader. Can anyone provide more information or estimate value?

It looks like a 10G from the emblems.

I don't understand your " safe to pass on to my 6th grader" other than it's a professional clarinet and normally you would want them to start on a beginner's clarinet. Maybe save that for High School. Unless you want them to use it.

Safe as far as not highly valuable should it be damaged going to elementary school.

The VALUE of this clarinet is around the £4000 mark (around $4500-5000) and as it's a pro level clarinet from a respectable maker, it deserves to be treated with far more respect than you're showing for it.

I am sorry that you feel that way. I certainly did not pay anything near that for this clarinet and there is no serial number on it so I was unable to look up the value by searching online. My basic knowledge of the Selmer Paris brand is what brought me to even begin my search because I thought it may be something more professional than what a 6th grader should be practicing on. I’m far from a professional musician myself but I am trying to treat the Clarinet and the work that went into it with respect.

Since you originally bought it off of eBay, if you were to check eBay for SOLD Auctions of the 10G you would find a recent one for $1,250 USD.

The whole issue is a 6th grader will bang around the clarinet. They may accidentally sit on it (put it on the chair then accidentally sit down on it) and splinter it; someone else may knock it out of the hands, etc. Their smaller, beginner fingers may not be able to cover the toneholes. In the old days, Beginner clarinets normally have smaller toneholes which were easier to cover. Entry-level, Beginner clarinets are normally plastic so one doesn't have to worry about any wood damage and wood care at that young age.

So in general, I would not recommend you give a 10G to a beginner clarinet player.

The real question is since you bought it off of ebay how much would you value the instrument at? Versus buying (renting) the 6th grader a student clarinet.

In the US beginner students are often able to rent from a local store, or one can buy, or buy from other sources (although it's buyer beware from unknown sources)

My immediate interpretation of this question was: Will the bad karma associated with this stolen clarinet, bought at online auction below market value, with serial numbers sanded off, be detrimental to the spiritual, emotional, and musical development of my child?

And my apologies for being a suspicious, pessimistic ass.

For a beginner, a plastic Vito would be an ideal clarinet as they're built like tanks and can withstand being played in all manner of conditions that school bands have to endure such as playing outdoors in all weather. Wooden clarinets don't always do too well in such conditions, although I've seen some wooden pro level clarinets that are mistreated by their owners and seem to manage to work, when others that are far better looked after have cracked, so it's always a gamble with any wooden clarinet.

The Selmer 10G can be kept by until a time the player shows they're serious about music and they feel they need a much better instrument to achieve their goals when they find a student model restrictive in their development.
