Sorry to hear this. He had a long career with the Cleveland Orchestra--more than 35 years, I believe. The ligature he sold--basically a copy of one of Frank L. Kaspar's --has always worked very well for me--no slip, stable, nice middle-of-the-road response. Didn't promise miracles and delivered dependable quality.

There is a real art to playing second clarinet which people do not always appreciate. It is much more than just playing along with the first player. Knowing how to support and shadow what the first clarinet does can be a challenge. The best players can make the job of the principal player much easier and enhance their playing, helping them to sound even greater. Ted Johnson was one of the best.

Using Mr. Johnson's E Flat playing as a reference, I found his recordings of the standard repertoire to be exemplary. Particularly impressive also are the live recordings of Mahler 9 and the Brahms Piano Quartet arr. by Schoenberg.
I have worn out my Cleveland Orch. vinyl of The Rite of Spring and Till Eulenspiegel. If that is him on the D clarinet part on Domestica.. Bravo!
