 Solos after Elementary Rubank?
Author: clarlyn

My daughter is just about done with Rubank Elementary Method for Clarinet (she's on Lesson 34 out of 38).

She's looking for a list of solos that would be good to try to either use for a youth symphony audition and/or for state festival solo performance. The more to choose from, the better. Perhaps some that are more technical and some that are more lyrical.

Thanks!

Is she at about grade 8 then?

I really like "The Victorian Kitchen Garden" by Paul Reade.

It's very well known in the UK, but I think maybe not so much in the US.

I'm not sure if that is an officially good thing for auditions. It's just something that is played a lot here.

Adult learner, Grade 3
Equipment: Yamaha Custom CX Bb, Fobes 10K CF mp,
Legere Bb clarinet European Cut #2.5, Vandoren Optimum German Lig.

You could try "Concert and Contest Collection" for Bb Clarinet, edited by H Voxman. It has 15 solos with piano accompaniment that are all fairly short. Some of the solos in the book are single movements from larger pieces.

Thank you SunnyDaze and Hunter 100. We will look for the score for the Victorian Kitchen Garden. It is quite pretty. We'll get the Concert and Contest Collection as well.

I should add that the solo needs to be 3-5 minutes in length. Back in April, she played a shorter piece called Branch Line by Colin Cowles which was used to determine her placement in a music camp, but generally she is needing longer solo pieces.

Also open to suggestions for pieces she could choose while she's learning Rubank Intermediate Method as she is likely to need more solos next Spring for camp placements.

Any other suggestions?

The Voxman Collection is good. Young players need a variety of approachable solos to work on, ranging from easy beginner to somewhat challenging intermediate in a variety of musical styles. The Norman Heim collections offer this--Norman Heim Solo Pieces for Beginning Clarinet and Norman Heim Solo Pieces for Intermediate Clarinet (published by Mel Bay). There is an out of print Music Minus One (MMO) CD that comes with the printed sheet music, recorded by stellar clarinetist Harold Wright that is worth searching for. If the student protests that some of the selections are "so easy to play," you can point out that "well not so easy to make them sound as good as Wright does." An opportunity to hear the difference between playing the notes and playing the music!
