 clarinet sound in online lessons

Hi everyone,

A question for anyone dealing as teacher or student with online lessons: I have a new student who cannot use Zoom. We're trying Google Duo, and while the connection is very stable, the online clarinet sound is not great. It tends to cut out or down in volume when she plays higher and/or louder.

I've seen this periodically over the past 2 years, and have assumed that this is a 'self-defense' mechanism of the microphone. Getting her a bit more distant improved things a bit, but the issue persists.

Has anyone had success with this? We've tried both the laptop mic and a stand-alone. It doesn't appear that Google Duo has the same kind of in-depth sound settings as Zoom.

Thanks a lot,

Peter

It is a function of the program to "stabilize" the sounds of the spoken word. It is a basic compressor. I don't know if there is any way to access settings for this, but if there is, you need to turn OFF any auto volume or auto dynamic settings.

My understanding is that facetime, discord, and skype all have settings that help. I haven't tried them, I've only used Zoom. There are other apps made just for music that some use.

Seems strange that Zoom can't be used - is it a matter of getting admin permission? Also, Chromebooks are usually terrible altogether for this unless some default settings on the machine have been changed. Often these are accessible only to administrators the way they are set up. It can be frustrating to deal with for sure!

It might be a good idea for your student to ask on the forum here:
https://support.google.com/duo/community/?hl=en&gpf=%23!forum%2FDuo

I think that what they need to do is to turn off the setting that makes the microphone handle voice well, but that community might know how to do it.

Thanks a lot for the ideas everyone! I've posted to that Duo forum. I didn't want to inquire too much about why Zoom isn't an option, but it is frustrating for sure. Mind you it could be the mic itself too. Thanks again!
