Playing after extraction

I'm having my last wisdom tooth extracted tomorrow morning. [frown]

It isn't impacted. But it has a large filling in it with decay underneath the filling and the dentist understandably doesn't want to repair the decay.

Can anyone tell me from experience how soon after a simple extraction I can expect to be able to play? I had two taken out a couple of years ago, but I can't remember if I was instructed to lay off for a week or not. I will, of course, ask the surgeon this tomorrow morning, but it would be useful to know sooner because if I can't play Wednesday or Thursday, I may want to get a sub to play Shostakovich 9th on Friday.

I don't know why this only occurred to me tonight.

Ask you suggest I would ask the surgeon for a range of time and what to look for. I recall many years ago having this done and it was slow to heal. It took me quite a while before I was back up to speed, probably well over a week. At the same time, I know people who were back in a relatively short time. If it were me, I would play it safe and get a sub just in case.

I was back to playing the next day, but it really does depend on the person. The wound has to scar properly.

IMO it would be prudent to arrange for a sub.

At least have a sub prepared. Not fair to drop Shost 9 on anyone at short notice.

I would reckon that a sub would be a good idea. I had a friend who had wisdom teeth out at University and her cheeks were very swollen the next day in lectures and she said it was quite uncomfortable. Probably a kindness to yourself and your conductor to give yourself a well earned day off. Good luck with the extraction. I hope it is super-easy and you feel like a million dollars asap afterwards.

Well, ironically, the whole question is now moot. I just tested positive for COVID this morning, so won't be having the extraction today OR playing Shosti 9 on Friday. Our 2nd player, who normally moves over to play 1st when I'm not there, will cover and I'll get someone to play 2nd. Bummer.

Hi Karl,
Hopefully you will get over the Covid soon, without any lingering side effects.

I suggest using an ice pack after extraction- a LOT.
Typically, the instructions you'd get from an oral surgeon will say "use an ice pack over affected area for 20 minutes every 1-2 hours" or similar.

I have had a few oral surgeries/procedures. I used an ice pack 20-30 min. on, 20-30 min. off, and kept doing that until night time.
Next morning I would have minimal swelling and pain.

I'm sorry to hear you got the covid on top of all that you already had booked in for the week. Life is so often stranger than fiction isn't it?

I hope the infection is short and mild for you and you get back to the fun asap. Take care there and rest up.

Thanks. I'm actually almost completely asymptomatic. Slight headachy feel and nothing much else. If not for the test, I wouldn't have thought anything was really wrong. I practiced last night with no COVID-related discomfort. So I've rescheduled the extraction and a couple of other things and I'm just waiting out the 5 days' isolation.
