 Eflat clarinet professional vs. student
Author: Jody

I am shopping e flat clarinets. It has been my experience that many student models have the two middle sections as one piece. However, I am seeing a Selmer e flat center tone listed as professional. It is also a one piece instrument. Is this a professional e flat clarinet, or a vintage student clarinet?

Most e flat clarinets are in one piece. I don,t know why, but they have started to do them with the middle joint. Except the really small case, it gives no advantage to the performance of the instrument. So is it with or without the middle joint has got nothing to do whether the instrument is professional or not. The price tag tells it.

Selmer Paris have made professional level clarinets from the word go until the late '90s when they launched the intermediate level Prologue and have only ever made pro level Eb clarinets.

The Centered Tone Eb clarinet is a pro level instrument and a very fine one at that. Provided it has been fully restored to a high level, it will be a reliable instrument and worth every penny spent on maintaining it, regardless how much or little the purchase price may be.

Selmer USA are the division that make student level clarinets, including their plastic Eb clarinets (Bundy, etc.).

A handful of years back I know Buffet started making a two piece Eb. I imagine part of that would be that they could use shorter billets of wood.

The older Selmer Ebs are really nice. I used to have a Series 9 that played beautifully

I have a full Boehm Series 9 Eb clarinet and it's a beauty. That's the model that came after the Centered Tone and was in production from the early '60s through to the late '70s.

I purchased a Selmer Center tone eflat. I tried a good quality student and knew I wouldn’t be happy for long. Playing the center tone was difficult at first. But I’m learning to give it a light touch on the mouth and it is working. It is a beautiful, well toned and well tuned instrument. It will take some time to get used to it, but I believe I will be very happy. Thank you for the suggestion.

I started with a center tone Selmer. A very good horn although one of the ugliest cases ever made. A friend here purchased one ~6 years ago and it's still a nice horn.

My last horn was a Prestige with a two piece body. The C#/G# key had to run through the tenon so there was a hole in the corking to allow this to happen. My Tosca is back to a one piece body and I prefer it. No chance for jamming the connections between the RH and LH notes. This Tosca is the first horn since the Selmer that has better intonation and sound across the instrument.
