Clarinet case that won’t cause silver keys to tarnish

I’m pretty sure the glue in my case causes my silver keys to tarnish. Is there a case with cover that won’t cause this?

Never experienced it with a case, which suggests it’s an unusual problem. You could try airing it, ideally in bright sunlight (without the clarinet!) to accelerate the disappearance of any glue vapours.

However, new ebonite mouthpieces shut in cases close to silver keys can have the same effect, but it’s the mouthpiece rather than the case.

It's definitely a problem with older cases. I would try any of the ProTecs, I've never had a problem with them. I also agree about the mouthpiece, put it in a plastic bag or store it outside the case.

Given them cheaper than a new case, and that switching cases may find similar issues, why aren't the use of anti-tarnish strips the better remedy, if not at least the best first thing to try?

They don't work very well for clarinets, they are designed for small pieces of jewelry so you need to use quite a few of them for instruments. Also they only last 6 months so eventually you would spend more on them than a new case.

Anything made of rubber that touches or is near the keys will do this. I once tarnished the plating on my keys when I used rubber hair ties to hold down the B keys when my clarinets were stored in the case. In that instance, the cause was obvious - the tarnish was in a track exactly where the hair band had been. Replacing the rubber with plastic bands solves the problem. I suppose that's the basis of suggesting a mouthpiece could be involved, but I've never found that to be a problem.

If you haven't already, check to be sure there's no rubber near the keys. I guess if rubber-based cement was used to hold the case lining in place, that might cause the problem. Anything that puts Sulphur into the air surrounding the clarinet could cause tarnish, perhaps not even related to the case.
