Grand Canyon Suite Cl.1 part for A clarinet?
Author: PeterinToronto 2017

Hi everyone,

This is coming up, and oh my, I join the chorus of comments here from 2007 about this not being for A clarinet. Just curious, does anyone have a transposition they wouldn't mind sharing?

Thanks a lot,

Peter in Toronto

I had to play Grand Canyon Suite about 6 years ago and I made a transposed part for both the first and second clarinet parts. The movements that were in lots of sharps I transposed for the A clarinet. The movements that were fine for B flat clarinet I left on the B flat. Send me an email with your email address and I'll send you the parts. Each page of music is a separate pdf file.

Bass clarinet in A would also come in handy for this piece. Too bad hardly anyone has one.

There is a program called Musescore available for free.

If the Gods are kind you can import a .pdf into their Mcz. format. You can then transpose to your hearts content. Make the .PDF the best possible quality.

Or, Type it into Musescore and transpose away.

It may be easier to get a barrel for your Bb to make it an A or vice versa.

Thanks everyone for your responses! I've been away. I'm getting into shedding this part; at the standard recorded tempos, it would be do-able with a few weeks lead-time, but I really appreciate the help offered, which I will follow up now!

Any chance a transposed part is still out there to be had? Looking especially for clarinet 2.

Thanks!!

Yes. I still have the transposed parts. The movements in lots of sharp keys are transposed for A clarinet. The other movements which are fine on B flat clarinet stayed on B flat clarinet. Send me your email address and I will send you the parts.

Keep in mind, everyone, that this thread is a year old.
Peter and PavelBB, if you're still watching it, do you still need the part(s)?

I'm thinking back to my only encounter with this piece, many years ago. Somehow I got through the bass clarinet part without crashing.

The many sharps were too much for the 1st player, even though he was a professional, and he wrote out a transposed part.

There really should be transposed parts, professionally created, available for sale, or at least included in rental sets. Each successive clarinetist shouldn't have to reinvent this wheel.

Or would that run afoul of copyright restrictions? The work of Grofe (d. 1972) won't be in the PD for many years, at least not in the USA.

Here in the UK I find its quite common to receive orchestral hire parts which contain a transposed clarinet part. Sometimes it's hand written, but increasingly its been produced through music software. Neither publishers (if they are the hirer) or the hirer company seem bothered to remove and destroy the 'illegal' copy parts on copyright grounds.

Quite recently, we had hirer parts for Mahler 5 from Germany. The second clarinet part also contained sections for D clarinet. All the entries for D clarinet has been covered over with identical printouts for Eb clarinet, which has been taped in place (with that semi-clear sellotape). The copied sections were perfect in every detail, even down to font size and any markings in the original, no matter where they were on the page.

If I ever need something serious transposed in a part, or the whole part, I just leave the transposition in the hire part when it's returned, just to make it easier for the next person. If I was ever questioned about copyright I'd just say the 'illegal' copy was in the hire part when I received it. But who is going to bother chasing the source of a copied part, especially a transposed one?

Hi Karl,

I got the transposed parts from RefacerMan, and they were fantastic! Many thanks for these, and great to read that some of you are trying to help the orchestral community by leaving your created transpositions in with hire parts.

Peter

And... to keep this going for another year, I just received this piece yesterday for a concert next month (2nd clarinet) and requested those copies from RefacerMan. I am hoping he still has them and can send them.

Have you emailed Tim (RefacerMan)? If he can't send you his transpositions, contact me at my email address (in my profile).
