 Steve Cohen's setup
Author: RefacerMan
Date:   2022-05-16 19:51

I just listened to a beautiful performance from 2018 I think of the Beethoven Septet. This was performed at Northwestern University with Gail Williams on french horn and Steve Cohen playing clarinet. Steve sounded incredible. I was wondering if any one knows what his setup is. Especially what mouthpiece he is playing. And if he is still using Legere reeds. Thanks for any info.

This picture seems to suggest a Playnick https://music.northwestern.edu/faculty/profile/steven-cohen though it's hard to tell even zoomed in. Anyone know what kind of ligature is that with screws on both right and left sides?

Per this ad, Steve Cohen is a Legere artist:

https://www.legere.com/artist/steve-cohen/

On this webpage, when looking at the red letters on the mpc, it appears that Mr. Cohen does use a Playnick clarinet mouthpiece. However, it is not specifically stated. What is stated is that he is a Buffet/Legere artist.

It may not be possible to pin point a specific "set up." There have been a few stories I've heard over the years that my feeble brain has held on to. The first was that when he was with the Cleveland Symphony he was dabbling in mouthpiece refacing. The story goes that in the middle of a performance during a moment with no music to play, he would take his mouthpiece off the instrument and do some refacing work and put it back on to play the rest of the concert. The other came from the Buffet boutique in New York (when there was still a Buffet boutique in New York). I was told he played on a 62mm barrel. While most players who would need a 62mm barrel would be playing incorrectly, he (I was told) was playing "low" correctly.

I don't know if there is anything to be gained from following another's specific lead, but it may be interesting to know.

I emailed Steve not too long ago about his mouthpiece. He said it was a Wodkowski (don't know which facing). He said he uses Legere reeds.

Hi Everyone

Steve has been a customer of mine for several years now. Started on a more open mouthpiece, and is now using one of my new, CNC made models which is a close facing.

Dan - Ive been making my own mouthpieces for years…

Older Wodkowski mouthpieces had code names like 1, 1B, Napoleon, Philadelpha, etc. Do the new CNC pieces also have such designations? Is so, which CNC model is Mr. Cohen playing? And how does it differ from the Philadelphia or the 1 (two close faced models)

Also, do you have a descriptive presentation of these new models anywhere online?

My new models are CNC made, designed 100% via computer software, based on scans taken of superb vintage mouthpieces - very much in the style of Henri Chedeville’s ideas, but with a modern spin. Steve has my B1 model, or Albert as I call it. Close facing, larger volume bore and narrow chamber, milled from solid German rubber. There are two other models within this initial close facing group, which offer different personalities and variety. The new models are similar in a way to my older mouthpieces, but the advantage of CNC is I design the mouthpiece 100% on computer software and can manipulate it any way I wish with the manufacturing process. All finished and faced by hand.

I have been selling these new models quietly via my client circles for the past year, and they have outsold all of my previous models. My new website will be up and running soon. They are for sale now - all one has to do is send me a message.

Thanks

Here's a video of Steven Cohen from about a year ago, playing in a duet transcription/arrangement of a Scriabin piece.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=mJv46vbcZS0

He's getting a great sound with excellent acoustical presence, focus, color, lightness, and "ping" --qualities that many associate with Henri Ched and other old French pieces (when played by excellent clarinetists). Is he playing a B2 "Albert" model here?

I recently ordered mouthpieces from Ramon. He sent me 3 models to try: N1, N2 and 2N. I believe that the N1 and N2 are rather close facing and the 2N is somewhat more open.

All three models are better than anything else that I've ever played on! They are fantastic mouthpieces and I bought all 3. I feel really comfortable on all of them and the only problem is deciding which one to use :-)

So far I've played performances of Das Rheingold, Bruckner's 6th symphony and the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto on the N1 model. I am extremely happy with the results that I got.

Now to fool around with the other two...
