Whatever your home state is, then that state must have the best all-state band.

We can all remember one thing --- the better _you_ become, the better the _competition_ gets!
Best,

Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Conneticut... to think I wasted my time memorizing the states in alphabetical order when I could have been practicing for All-State.

Well, Texas has so many people that it should be considered really competitive. But don't forget that in the ratio of awesome high school players to land area is owned by Hawaii! You just don't get packed talent like we do here

I've always thought that New York had the best.
isn't NYSSMA the strongest school music organization?
and many, many (like half) music teachers in Texas (and other states too!) own a copy of the NYSSMA manual.
hmm...i wonder why. hehe

i disagree with the NY assumption... i've heard many top new york high schoolers and was far from impressed with the tone quality however the technique they boasted was phenomenal!

Hm, I'm from California & we have a pretty good all-state band, but when I listened to Missouri's all-state group I have to admit that they are *really* good. I've never heard TX's all-state group but I have a pen pal from down there who claims they're the best all-state group they've ever heard...

Jessica when did you hear missouris all-state band? did you get to hear the 2001 concert? if you did i was sitting ninth chair there in the clarinet section. I must say that the only other all-state group i have heard was texas and alabama and I thought that we were every bit was good as texas and i wasnt that impressed with alabama.

I think it all depends on the year, some years one state might not have a very good group and other years they might be great.
I think all the states group have had there GREAT years.
Just a thought!

Texas has 4 or 5 million folks around DFW, another 4 or 5 million around Houston, nearly a million around Auston, and way more than a million around San Antonio.

Tennessee doesn't really stand out in any particular ways, but we do turn up some very outstanding individuals.

Texas is probobly one of the most competitive, I don't know about best (I was all state Contra Clarinet a couple years ago)...... anyway... Every state has their good and bad players... just Texas has more to choose from, not saying any of them are good or bad. My friend was an all state alto sax player, for 3 years, and he told me that every year it was different, some sections were stronger than others, and some people he wondered how they even ended up there. Its all based upon a lot of different variables.
