 Gladiator versus Silver King
Author: Bill_D

I play for my own pleasure. I'm trying to decide between the Gladiator and Silver King. I understand that the Silver King is professional level, and the Gladiator is on the opposite end. The price difference between the two that I'm considering is about 3.5.

I like the "feel" of quality in my finger tips when I play. I have a Buffet R13 that meets this criteria.

My questions: Is there a noticeable difference in timber and key action between the Gladiator and Silver King? Anything else to help me decide?

I considered a two piece Silva-Bet, but ruled it out since not as many were made, and if I ever need parts it would be more difficult to get them.

In a word - yes. I do not know the Gladiator at all, but the difference between the Silver King and all other silver clarinets is HUGE. I liked the Silver King much better than the silver Selmer, which is also considered a pro horn. I have NEVER regretted buying a better horn over a cheaper one, but I have regretted buying the cheaper one to save $ - just my opinion.

Cheers,

Marty Magnini

The Silver King rules. I owned one and loved it, but had a financial situation that forced me to sell it. Even though I got twice what I paid for it, I regret letting it go. Silver King is an exceptional metal clarinet. Not so the gladiator.

I agree, the Silver King over a Gladiator any day !

As for the Silva Bett , it's not parts the real issue (you'll have a hard time finding any for any metals) but what you like - metal Selmer is not like a Silva Bett is not like a Silver King. I have played all 3 - the King is great for jazz and playing with a lot of big bass and sax people honking away and it's tuned at 440. The Selmer is (mine is) gorgeous sounding and an all round instrument, with an adjustable barril. The Silva Bett is another sound, less to my liking but it's a lovely instrument. The only other one to consider IMHO is the Conn N415.

If you're looking for an instrument to play regularily, go for the quality metal clarinet as even the better student or midlevel models don't come close (ask me how I know, then again don't !). If at all possible play test before you buy and check for bungled repairs and stripped screw heads that lessen the value and maintenance potential.

No model name on it, just the N° 2xxx, from around 1939 if I remember correctly. More info on Selmer metals here : http://silver-clarinet.com/

I purchased the Silver King and I'm glad I did. Thanks all for the input.

Silver King is a good investment, a beautifully made instrument - they were pro models. The Gladiator was a budget instrument aimed at the student market. Go for the King!
