So I was a b-flat clarinet player for a year and a half and have switched to the contra-alto clarinet in my intermediate band class and would like some pointers for beginners so that I don't squeak and squeak and also so points on anything to do with the instrument

Constant squeaking is usually caused by a poorly-faced mouthpiece with an unbalanced tip. Don't change reeds yet - get a decent mouthpiece first. I recommend Clark Fobes' mouthpieces.

I second the mouthpiece. Legere reeds aren't any less likely to squeak than cane reeds, but a bad mouthpiece will squeak like crazy.
