I have a serious question for those out there "in the know." I believe I've heard this old mouthpiece touted before as one of the "Holy Grails." Notwithstanding the missing lower third, is this image representative of this storied mouthpiece? And if so, can I assume they were rather short facing mouthpieces?

Aren't sawn-off mouthpieces illegal?

Don’t you hate it when you buy a vintage instrument expecting it to be HP but its actually standard LP? Here’s a quick fix for you anti-social musicians out there!

Another serious comment: If there is anything particularly magical about this facing and tone chamber, someone like Brad Behn could easily fuse a lower third on there......I believe.

This particular mouthpiece is actually for soprano saxophone, as is evident in pictures of the duckbill profile from the rear. The eBay link for this mouthpiece is here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/165226846536

Um.......... it still appears there is some amount of mouthpiece shorn off. If you were to stick a sax neck into this thing it would protrude into the tone chamber. And I have seen duckbill clarinet mouthpieces. In fact a have a few by Charles Bay.

Yes, some of the shank has been hacked off, but compare it to Lelandais clarinet mouthpieces of similar vintage:

and then to another Lelandais soprano sax piece: https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/lelandais-vintage-soprano-sax-423308004

Looks like this is correct on the soprano sax front. But "hoobdeebla," do you know what the facings look like on the Bb clarinet versions? Is it a short window like the soprano sax mouthpieces? Does the shortness of the window mirror the shortness of the facing?
