 Boosey & Hawkes Woodwind Book
Author: Ken Shaw 2017
Date:   2012-05-09 00:56

I recently found a copy of Woodwind Book 1957-8, published by Boosey & Hawkes, with interesting articles by the leading players of the day, incuding clarinetists Jack Brymer, Sidney Fell, Reginald Kell, Abraham Galper, Walter Lear and Gervase de Peyer.

According to the preface by Geoffrey Hawkes, "Shortly before the outbreak of war in 1939, we published the first Woodwind Book." He says that the 1957 book contains all new material.

I've made a fairly thorough search (inclding WorldCat, the British Library and B&H) without finding another reference to or copy of the 1937 edition, other than three OCLC numbers, 1812344, 12680502 and 517199130, which may or may not refer to the 1937 edition.

Has anyone seen or know a source for the 1937 edition?

Ken Shaw

Hi Ken

I have a copy of the older Boosey handbook - could scan it and email over if you like - perhaps you could do the same for me with yours?

Thanks

For the record the original book although set up in the late 1930s was delayed by onset of war and when finally published bore the title....
"Woodwind Year Book 1940-1"
has 128 fascinating pages and was priced at 1/- one shilling sterling or 12 old pence (in those days there were 240 pence to the £ sterling) so about 8c in USA money today !!

I spent more than 10 years searching for a copy and 4 years ago found one via ABEbooks - it was located in Australia (back in those days B&H covered the entire empire).

My copy is unfortunately rather fragile and I wouldn't want to stress it by flexing it flat on every page to scan.

ps. although title included "year book" the 1940-1 and 1957-8 books were the only ones ever produced.
By 1958 the price had risen to 6/- so inflation is no new thing.

Dear colleagues and friends,
I have had an old copy of the Woodwind Book 1957-8 for many years.
I grew up in Edgware, Middlesex, UK and lived only a few miles from the Boosey & Hawkes factory. For several years whilst still at school, I worked on the production line in the factory and learnt how to make and repair instruments. I worked on the last of the 'Symphony 1010' and 'Imperial 926' clarinets which were considered amongst the best instruments available at the time and the preferred choice of many leading professional players.

I did not know there was another edition of the Woodwind Book and like some of the other contibutors here, would like to request a copy if at all possible.

Many thanks and best wishes to all,

Laurence A Frankel

Laurence,
I suggest you follow the approach I took and make searches of the online book sites at regular intervals, it may take some time to find one (10 years in my case but did get it eventually).

Hi, I have just found this thread and interested to know how much this book has been selling for. I can't find any record of it anywhere apart from this thread. Would really appreciate any information regarding price that you could let me know. Thank you in advance.

Anyone know if £20 is too much to pay for this book?

It took me a couple of decades to locate a copy of the 1940-41 Year Book. After searching for the first few years, I popped into B&H in Regent St (some archival room in the rear of the place) and they went through their records and was unable to find any trace of the print run at all. After another heap of years, I finally located a copy through Abebooks so finally pinned it down in Nova Scotia at $US20 plus a heap of postage. And my copy is pretty fragile too.

A couple of years ago, I noticed Basil Tchaikov's library came onto the market with a copy of the 1940-1 book. That went to another CASS member I contacted.

In short, as mentioned earlier, AbeBooks laced with a great deal of patience finally payed off

Abebooks.com is good source for out of print and rare books, and there are other such sources as well, for example Bookfinder.com, and Biblio.com. These sometimes have the Leon Russianoff method, books 1 and 2 for sale. On Biblio.com I recently found a copy of the 2112 page revision of the (unabridged) Liddell Scott (Ancient) Greek Lexicon for just $40.00. These usually go for 3 to 5 times that much.
