Let me put it this way.......... those who actually had a good shot at winning the audition probably all knew about this quite a while ago. But I still find it odd that there are folks interested in the outcome enough to query the group at large but not quite interested enough in helping others out by passing the word along when the audition was first posted.

Interesting

Here is an example

https://www.musicalchairs.info/clarinet/jobs

The Military Academy Band is where Larry Combs got his start and the US Army Field Band is a good first gig as well.

Is it JUST ME getting bent out of shape about these gossipy posts????????? How does knowing who GOT a job help any one else?

I don't see them as gossipy, just people who are curious and seeking info

Chris Elchico won the position of Second Clarinet in the Boston Symphony.

I found this podcast with Chris Elchico that really allows you to get to know him a little, way more than just a list of previous musical gigs or accomplishments.

I couldn't get the web address to copy correctly so you'll just have to "Google" the following:

The Language of Creativity Podcast
PERFECT PITCH – CHRIS ELCHICO (CONCERT SAXAPHONIST/CLARINETIST) EP.7

Great guy, great musician.

Hey Paul, I am interested in where all the good players are playing. You sound bitter you didn't audition? Or get the seat?
I saw a BSO concert live in late November and saw a lady playing in the clarinet section who was not listed in the program. Was disappointed.

Yes, there is some latent bitterness.

And yet I don't mind knowing where all the great players are and who they are. It just strikes me as odd that this forum that is mostly a good place to go for advice to help a brother out, seems unusually silent when it comes to decent jobs that open up.

We are not ALL young hot shots looking to get that next big break (willing if not eager to keep that announcement quiet). Quite a few of us are old and have a LOT of time on our hands, or are professional repair people or a host of other things not even related to music. How is it that we KNOW an audition HAPPENED but we aren't talking about it when it is announced? Maybe I want to know what happened to the last second clarinet player of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Michael Wayne was the last 2nd cl. with the Boston Symphony, having held that position since 2008. He started teaching at Eastman School of Music in 2019 and is now an associate professor there. I'm pretty sure that news was on Facebook Clarinet Jobs, YouTube's The Candid Clarinetist, and several other places on the web.

Paul, you have made false assumptions.
I know 'hartt'. He is a good guy and wasn't hiding any information for his own gain, just passing on some clarinet info for us here.

Sorry, don't take my criticism the wrong way. I am looking at the larger picture. 'hartt' may be someone "in the know" just looking to complete the "story," but my criticism is really directed at EVERYONE on the Board who is more knowledgeable on the audition front yet remains silent when it comes to passing on information to the masses.

So maybe I am the ONLY one who didn't know about Facebook Clarinet Jobs, or YouTube's The Candid Clarinetist, but it I think those are resources that might be mentioned a little more around here. How about a thread on those resources? Maybe there are one or two amazing young musicians out there that still don't know about them.........it might help them out.

When I was a student I had to rely on membership in the local music union and the receipt of their regular publication (or Europe's Das Orchester), yet more expense on top of travel to the auditions themselves.

When I was a young scientist the inside information on what jobs were available was hard to come by, open only to people who had the right friends. These days we have a weekly newsletter with all the jobs and funding opportunities listed, so that everyone has an equal shot at the them. It's a big help for women and ethnic minorities, making that information freely available, so that jobs don't just go to what used to be called the "old boys network".

The BBoard has had discussions about opening up opportunities for ethnic minority players and it's clear that that would be a good thing.

I think that having a thread as Paul suggests, in which job adverts are posted, would be a big step in the right direction. It would open up musical opportunities to women and ethnic minority players and anyone who isn't in the inside circle, if you know what I mean.

Maybe between us we could all keep our ear to the ground, and bring the links to job adverts, to be posted here?

Sounds great! And I believe the places to look may be a bit different on that side of Atlantic.

Thanks

To answer the second part of the original post — the Nashville audition was postponed, likely until next season, due to high community spread of Covid there.

Could also be a slight delay in part caused by the weather that has paralyzed the city for the last two and a half days. We are not equipped to deal with seven inches of snow (only 40 salt trucks and 8 tons of salt for the entire metro area) and sub freezing temperatures. Even this morning we are advised not to drive unless absolutely necessary.

Hi Paul,

Sorry to hear you are snowed in. I had no idea that your climate was so different from ours.

Shall we start hunting for job adverts, and bringing them back here to chat about then? I really enjoyed hearing people talking about their careers in military bands.

I'd like to hear more about that, and would be glad to hunt out job adverts, especially if it would benefit young professionals coming through.

There are truckloads of jobs on here. Maybe we could choose one each week and talk about what it would be like to do that job and what they look for in the audition process. That would help young people coming through, wouldn't it?

I'm sure the weather would not have made getting to the audition any easier — I was originally supposed to fly straight there from Boston today! But the official reason for the postponement was health concerns. We had just finished the preliminary round in Boston when we received the email from Nashville telling us not to come.

Covid is making things rough. Oddly Tennessee has the highest rate of new infections per capita.

I started a “Clarinet Audition Notices” post. Perhaps I should change the last word to “Info” and start posting ANYTHING helpful regarding auditions there.
