Hi all,
Just wondering if any of you here (preferrably based in England, but I'm open to those elsewhere) has previously made barrels for the Amati C clarinet, ideally ones that allow Bb mpcs to work on the instrument? Please let me know, and I'll contact you via email. Thanks!
I have an Amati C which I bought from a blowout sale at Dawkes Music a year or so ago... but it does NOT have functional barrel, as its 2 barrels were improperly made at 41 & 43.5mm respectively, and have VERY different bore tapers, both apparently resulting in very poor intonation. The bore size of the horn is HUGE at 15mm, and has a big 3mm choke in the bell right below the lower joint tenon, and not sure if it also has some detriments to this C's performance?
PS I'm well aware of the Forté Cs the late Dr. Omar Henderson had Amati built for him, but since I've never encountered one, I don't know if the barrel dimensions of the Forté is the same as the 'vanilla' Amatis?

If you want to also have an interesting day out, Daniel Bangham at Cambridge Makers runs a Barrel Experimentation day which can include making your own barrel (with help!).

I designed a barrel for the Forte C clarinet. I was not impressed with how stuffy the stock barrel was so I made one that was quite a bit more free blowing. Looking at my notes I made it 46mm long which gave me the best intonation even though the stock barrel was 43.5mm as you mentioned. I believe the current Amati is roughly the same design. I’d be happy to make you one and ship it to England.
