Hi All,
Just wondering if anyone has come across with the problem of a buldging neck whilst playing before. I am getting a considerable buldge and a lot of uncomfortableness as well. It feels like the windpipe near my voicebox has been stretched a fair bit....
I spoke to some of my brass buddies and they commented that it frequently occurs with Trumpet players and is caused by tension in the upper half of the chest. (ie: holding the air) I have also seen it occur in oboes as well.
Can anyone help me with this problem?
Roger

I dont like to look in the mirror while playing, unless I'm trying to control my "jowl pressure-bulge" but say to myself, "I dont look as bad as Dizzy Gillespie". Build up those muscles! Don

Are you sure you are not circle breathing? I do this when I circle breathe.

My neck puffs a little when I play but not too bad. My cheeks, when I was young gave me fits for about a year, but as my enbouchure strengthened I got more control over them. The local band director was having problems with some of the kids really puffing out those cheeks here (they weren't trying to control), so I brought in a video of Dizzie in his latter years where his whole neck and head swells up when he blows. We showed it during band practice and it cured most of the puffy cheeks almost overnight.
