What pads will I need for a Noblet 40 plateau clarinet?

My Noblet 40 plateau requires a repad - should it be repadded with the same sort of pads that a standard open hole instrument would have?

For best venting and airtightness as well as a positive feel, use cork or high density synthetic pads in all the fingerplates and keys except the largest four where you can use leather or synthetic pads.

Make sure the venting is set nice and open as opposed to using thick pads or crappy skin pads that are often too thick and compromise the venting as that will make the lower register dead and stuffy.

Better to having too much venting than too little and this is especially true with all clarinets with covered action. Set the RH main action to 3mm and the rest will follow suit.

If in doubt, have an oboe specialist overhaul it using cork pads rather than a general woodwind repairer who has no experience with oboes or covered hole clarinets for that matter and slaps in a load of ill-fitting skin pads everywhere. Also specify the ventings that will make it sing rather than wheeze.

Many thanks Chris for your informative response to my query - with regard to cork pads I see Dawkes sell individual cork pads but don't say what the thickness is - are these going to be okay?

They're probably around 3mm thick, so you can make them as thick or as thin as you need once you've done all the prep work to make them completely flat and smooth as you can't use cork pads straight away. Install them using shellac and make sure all the toneholes are put in perfect order to deal with any defects which will cause leaks.

I'll offer different advice than Chris P here. I recommend Ferree Tools' B32 tan leather pads. I've been using them almost exclusively in all the alto and bass clarinets (and many soprano clarinets) I've overhauled over the past 20+ years.
For installation I use clear silicone glue (a.k.a. caulk or sealant).

I disagree with the silicone caulk. I would only use an adhesive that is easily removed with heat.

Also using shellac will ensure adjustments can be made at any point in time as silicone sealant can't be adjusted once it's set.
