I am trying to find information on Edward Simson, an Estonian clarinettist who emigrated to Australia and was principal clarinet in the Sydney Symphony during the late 1930s and 40s. He receives a mention in Weston's Virtuosi of Today, but I am very keen to see if I can find anyone who had a personal connection with him that I could contact.
Regards

Maybe you should try to contact Donald Westlake, a former principal clarinet with the SSO, who wrote a biography of Eddie Simpson. He interviewed Eddie's son, if I remember correctly. (I don't have any contact information for Mr Westlake.)

Hello,
The following concert announcement for 1947 suggests that you might want to contact Musica Viva - Sydney. (Richard Goldner, one of the performers, was the founder.) They might have an archivist/historian.
Unfortunately Answers.com gives Donald Westlake's death as December 2008. His son Nigel is an active composer and performer.
Good luck-- Peter

Nigel Westlake can likely be contacted through his publishing outfit, Rimshot Music. http://www.rimshot.com.au/

There are two prominent Donald Westlakes . . . an American writer, who died in 2008, and an Australian clarinettist, who died in August this year.
The Sydney Morning Herald ran an obituary of the clarinettist Donald Westlake on September 7, two weeks ago today. That obit was written by Nigel Westlake, who should be contactable throught the Sydney Morning Herald if not through other avenues.
