 The Thermo-reed
Author: JohnP

I have just received a promo email from Arundos reeds as I tried a couple of boxes once.
It’s in German so my translation.

New! The Thermo-reed. Innovative refinement process for our reeds.
Longer life, no warping. Refined look.

Arundos.com

Any thoughts? Anybody tried the Thermo-reed?

I visited the website and Google Translated it to English.

I wonder if Arundos' "secret sauce" here is (primarily) the pressure treatment of the cane with steam, consistent with methods discussed in links like the following:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermally_modified_wood

https://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/documnts/pdf2002/rowel02a.pdf

https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/bm101144m#:~:text=Steam%20treatment%20is%20a%20hygrothermal,comprise%20a%20wood%20cell%20wall.

And regardless of their processes, I find myself raising the questions I suspect many of us have as it regards whether their processes produce more consistently good reeds, that last longer, and to what extent those attributes hold true. I'd hate to think (and have no reason to suspect) that these processes increase the stability of cane, but in doing so also render it compromised for play.

Still more I'm forced to compare it to my current methods of promoting dimensionally stability and life that involve use of humidity controlled storage, to minimize a reed's changes in hydration once put into play, and reed rotation.

I can't imagine that these reeds won't, like any other non-synthetics require user adjustment: by no mean meant disparagingly against Arundos. Even within a single reed the cane varies such that a perfectly symmetrical cut might not produce the best playing reed: the user deliberately play testing and removing wood to create asymmetry in size, but symmetry in play.

Certo. IMHO: this could be just another snake oil (or caramel).
