When I borrowed a stretchy strap from a teacher years ago, I raised the clarinet up higher on the strap so that the "sagged" position was where I wanted it, but I had this feeling like the strap was pulling the instrument into my face a little too much. I didn't like the feeling.
My impression was that the stretchy straps are meant more to take some (but not all) of the lifting responsibility away from the hands.
But who knows? Like I said, lots of people like them, including players much better than me.
