Bonades... Silver plated VS Nickel plated... Inverted VS Non-inverted
Author: Jimis4klar

According to Dale Fedele, for more open mouthpieces, inverted ones are better. I don't know, may non-inverted be good too for open mouthpieces?(like BD series) What's your experience? I have a 24k gold non-inverted but is heavy for BD4 and BD7. Did you try different platings? How do they respond? Is It better to find old design of inverted or non-inverted than getting a new design? The plating is better quality on old ones? Did any of you try inverted modified like this? https://tbwinds.com/products/ligature-clarinet-bb-bonade-clarinet-inverted-gold-modified?_pos=4&_sid=e146475cd&_ss=r

It is personal, so buy a few different ones, record yourself comparing them, pick the best and sell the rest

I think that's what I'm gonna do, thanks! The silver is more dense material than nickel? I asked a store and told me the silver gives more brilliant sound than nickel, is that true?

I can't imagine that silver plate rather than nickel plate would make any difference in sound. Silver plate will tarnish, while nickel plate may cause nickel allergies. My complaint about inverted ligatures is that they scratch the mouthpiece.

In sound may not make difference, but in response? I think the denser material would make It a little heavier, maybe close to nickel but little heavier.. Well, that's why I ask If anyone tried different finishes..

Isn't gold plating usually just a few microns thick? I've had a few Bonades over the years and I've never seen two that were similar enough in the details of their construction that I'd attribute any differences in playing characteristics to a few microns of plating. Different amounts of solder under the rails, the screw receiver and guide being differently aligned, the spacing of the rails varying a little, the rails never being perfectly parallel, the shape of the metal between the rails (on inverted ligatures), the cleanliness of the threads, etc.

I'm not saying any of those are making or breaking a ligature, really. I just think those would all be confounding factors that would prevent us from ever determining what differences were caused only by the plating.

It doesn't surprise me that a gold plated Bonade and a nickel plated Bonade will play a little differently if you really try to find a difference. A nickel plated Bonade and a nickel plated Bonade will also probably play a tiny bit differently from one another.

That's also true, nickel ones may also differ from one another.. and of course there are lots of variations in design, minimal differences which could make differences in response and sound, but I want to learn about plating..
