Hi,
I just bought a new lubyen ligature and I wondered if there is a magic trick to getting it to stay on?
When I put it on, it slides gracefully up the mouthpiece and then I can just lift it off. I tried putting it on tightly and loosely, and neither solves the problem.
I wrote to the manufacturer, but they don't seem to have any idea.

The first three clips are the lubyen and the last is my Rovner dark.
I see from the lubyen website that the ligature has been redesigned, so it may be quite different from the ones that Tony bought previously and recommended on a different thread.

Ya know, with mouthpieces just being a cone shape made of slippery hard rubber and using them with slippery barked cane reeds (or plastic) it is a wonder to me why all hard material ligatures don't do this.
When I run across this problem I take a small section of 250 grit sandpaper and the sand laterally across the interior surface of the ligature (twist the ligature around the finger with the sandpaper on it). This should create small lateral groves around the interior of the ligature (for the Luyben that would be the sides and top near the screws as well as the four plastic "buttons" that actually touch the reed). Remember it's just roughing up the surface a bit, not actually taking any significant material.

Same trick I always use with Bonades as those are notorious for slipping when new

When did the re-design happen ? I got a second Luyben last year and have had not problems with either it of the older one I got on an old used instrument. I love them both.
Hey, if it ain't broke , don't fix it ! Hope they haven't changed too much.

It was some years ago (10?). The main change was the plastic formulation. It became just slightly harder. Back in the day, the clear ligature was a bit softer........no more.
More recently (couple of years or so) they started using the knurled screws rather than the flat heads (I think the knurled screws are easier to use).

I think it was a re-tool rather than a redesign. I understand that the original molds were getting a bit worn and the definition of the ligatures had declined, so they had new molds made. They may well have changed the material at the same time.

SuunyDaze-When you made this video did you have your Rovner tightened up to where you would while playing? I have a Rovner and when it is tightened, it does not budge.
