Hey bass clarinet players. I own a Buffet Prestige 1193-2 Bass Clarinet which I purchased last fall. I was just wondering if someone with a similar instrument has a mouthpiece recommendation. Right now I'm using the Buffet mouthpiece, which is actually a great mpc. (suprising considering Buffet soprano mpcs.) i've been considering a Bay or a Van Doren 45. Also, I would love to hear from anyone who's tried a Pyne Bass mpc. Thanks!

If you promise not to laugh, I'll confess that I'm using a new Selmer Paris C* mouthpiece with my Buffet Bass Clarinet, which is considerably older than yours. I tried several mouthpieces, including a Van Doren, and I found the Selmer to be very rich on the low notes yet bright on the high end.
I also bought a ligature that hides the Selmer name on the mouthpiece so that I won't be ridiculed by the soprano clarinets.

we r in the same boat:) I'm using a Selmer C* bass clarinet mouthpiece too. LOL
I too find that its a good bass clar mouthpiece.
It adds more "edge" to the sound (especially the lower register)compared to a Selmer C**.
Vandoren B44 is also another good bass clar mouthpiece I have tried.

I also use a Selmer C* for bass clarinet. I don't hide the fact, I believe it is a good mouthpiece. I bought mine several years ago (1970 vintage), but it delivers a very good sound that is consistent in all ranges.

Suggestion: Try a Pomarico crystal mouthpiece for your bass clarinet.

I use mainly a Selmer E (tip = 2.00) and sometimes a Selmer H (2.30). I also have Selmer C and C* but don't use those.
The bigger mouthpieces give more volume but are also harder to handle. The bigger tip opening gives more bending possibilities and expression on the high notes.
The tip of the original Buffet mouthpiece is 1.90 which is the same as Selmer D and almost as Van Doren B45 (193) Tip of Selmer C* is 1.80.
I also like the original mouthpiece a lot. Ofcourse tipopening is just one of may factors. Facing lenght and shape of inside bore are also very important.

I've been really pleased with Rick Sayre's custom K-13 mouthpieces. They're the next best thing to a Kaspar bass mouthpiece that i've been able to find.
His Selmer C* refaces are okay, but not as good as his custom model. Clark Fobes makes nice mouthpieces for bass too. They have very good response and fine intonation, but just not the warmth that Rick's mouthpieces have.
I believe Rick's mouthpieces are $135 and Clark's are around $195 last i checked.

I have a Pomarico bass mpc that i'm trading back in to my teacher for a credit on my Kaspar Bb mouthpiece. I like it well enough for chamber music like a quintet or quartet. But for solo or large group/orchestral work, it just doesn't have the presence and edge that is required. Plus the crystal tends to make he sound darker than it usually is (which is usually dark enough to begin with).

I suggest you try a Bay MO-M for Bass. It has a great tone plus control the entire range. I found it to have a smoother tone above the staff than the Selmer or the Morgan, and a richer fuller sound in the low register than either of the other mouthpieces.

I suggest trying a bass clarinet mouthpiece made by Bill Street of Gorham, Maine. These are very expensive, but well worth the price. I have used Bay, Selmer c*, Hite and Kaspar... while each one has it's own personality, and all are quite fine, the Street mouthpieces are very exceptional. In this case, you do get what you pay for!
