 Pasquale Cardillo question
Author: joe englert

Hi, just wondering if anyone out there studied with him cuz I had a couple questions...I remember that Rosario Mazzeo said he thought Pasquale had a tone as good as Wright or for that matter, just about anyone. Was wondering from your first hand experience how you would describe his tone...pretty sure he played single lip if I'm not mistaken. And secondly I wondered if he ever mentioned what he thought of Wright and what he thought of Cioffi. I assume he was very close with Cioffi but not sure how he got along with Wright. Also, I am assuming he changed clarinets from Selmer to Buffet when Wright took over .. Thanks very much!!

You can hear Cardillo on many old Boston Pops recordings.

Here is a nice example with Wright.

I studied with Cardillo in the 70s. He helped me to reconstruct my embouchure after I got myself into trouble due to my own shortcomings. He was an excellent teacher.

He spoke very highly of Cioffi's sound but without elaborating I will say that he had questions about some aspects of his musicianship. He had nothing but praise for Wright, his sound and his musicianship and as far as I know they got along very well.

I studied with Cardillo after Wright came into the BSO, and as far as I know he always played Selmers. He played full Boehm system horns (minus the low Eb) while Cioffi was there and when Wright joined he switched back to standard Boehm Selmer 10Gs. He had me try his horns in a lesson once but I was not impressed enough to switch from my Buffet R13s. I don't think this difference in brands between him Wright was a serious issue. Ed's example from Tchaikowsky's 5th in the above link is the best example of this.

Besides the Pops recordings you should find the Munch recordings of Symphonie Fantastique and Daphnis from 1955 where his solo Eb playing is one of the highlights. For 2nd clarinet listen to the Ozawa recordings of Ravel's Rhapsodie Espagnole and the 1978 (I think) recording of Daphnis with (I think) Abado. Other people can probably recommend other recordings.

And, of course, the Pops recording of Rhapsody in Blue with Fiedler and Earle Wilde on piano.

wow..thanks sooo much...great insight..interesting he stayed with selmer as well...for sure, I thought he sounded fantastic...pops recordings of outdoor overture and the shostokovitch festive overture has a couple solos he plays that are incredible...I always thought from what I could hear, he sounded very much like Wright, at least in the setting of symphony hall...not much about him on the internet so you ex students are all I have to go on!!

Here's one list of known recordings Pasquale Cardillo participated in:

That Selmer 10G that he switched to when Wright joined the orchestra was the model Gigliotti helped create, based in part on Buffet R13s that had been reworked by Hans Moenning.
