 Backun Fat Boy barrel. Thoughts?

Looking at one of these for either my Leblanc LL or Dynamique. Since I don't play
with others, just myself for personal enjoyment, I'm not concerned about tuning. I do have a question about using this on the big bore Dynamique. Not sure the bore size of the Backun or whether it's cylindrical or polycylindrical, but am concerned that it might restrict air flow. Admittedly I'm more attracted to the look rather than improved sound, but don't want it to restrict the sound and free blowing abilities of my Leblanc. Either one. Anyone have an opinion to share?

To be honest that's a pretty bad reason to buy an aftermarket barrel. Of course it's your money and you can get whatever you want, but if you're only buying it for looks you might as well buy one of the cheap no name barrels from eBay instead. I've never tried a Fatboy on a Leblanc, but I was unimpressed with it on my R13.

JDbassplayer, you're absolutely right about my bad reasoning. Been like that all my life. Saw the "no name" barrels on ebay too, but figured the Backun name might mean better quality. FYI, the only thing I was impressed with as far as aftermarket on my R13 was a Pomarico crystal MPC and Vandoren Optimum lig. Aside from those, there's not much improvement needed for an R13. Thanks for your input.

If it makes you happy, why not?

Maybe you could try it and tell us what you find?

I have 2 for my A/Bb Yamaha CSGs: 55.5 & 56.5mm. The were recommended by Scott Kurzweil who said they would provide a more focused sound than the standard CSG barrels. They do provide that and a bit “smoother”, “warmer”, or more “refined” sound. The intonation is spot on. Surprisingly, their bore is narrower than the stock barrels and most of my Zinner or Vandoren mouthpieces, but almost exactly the bore size of my standard Vandoren BD4s!

Call me odd, but I do also like the look and especially the feel in my hand.

I also have a colleague who has one for her Buffer Festival and loves it. I can’t speak to its attributes, but she sounds/plays great on it (with a BD5-13)

Thanks for the info Bob. I'm going to have to find a store that has them and try the barrel out. My concern is their bore being smaller than the bore of the clarinet and the effect on sound.
