I keep hearing/reading that the B & H 1010 big bore clarinet needs a big bore MPC in order to play properly. I believe the bore is the same size as my Leblanc Dynamique since I've heard the Dynamique has been called the American 1010. Should I be using a big bore MPC on the Leblanc? There's a B & H 1010 big bore MPC for sale on line and I'd buy it if necessary. Any help on this will be appreciated.

As far as I understand it Leblanc never made any instrument that was the boosey 1010 bore. In fact I’m not aware of any other maker making 1010 bore clarinets when Boosey were in operation.

I don't think the bore on that Leblanc is big enough to require you to use a special wide bore mouthpiece. What you usually play on will probably work fine.

If the Dynamique bore is larger than normal, whether 1010 (15.25mm) or a bit smaller, or ‘non-standard’, you can get the bore of virtually any mouthpiece increased by an appropriate mouthpiece technician. It’d be cheaper than buying a mouthpiece (£30-40) and you’d probably end up with a better solution if you started with a mouthpiece you have and like. The B&H mouthpiece were often not very good. Altering the bore may require a slight adjustment to the length of the mouthpiece as well. Professionals have told me boring out to 1010 doesn’t affect the characteristics of the mouthpiece in any significant way, and that’s my experience.

I think Rossi made large bore instruments comparable with the 1010.

Tony F he does indeed and of course Peter Eaton did. But when Leblanc were in their height of production it was B&H only.
JTJC when I was a 1010 player (B&H and Eaton Elites) I had a Hite that was bored out. It didn’t lose anything and they generally don’t when done with the correct reamer.

I use a Selmer mouthpiece that was bored out by Ed Pillinger. It plays very well indeed. Better than me.

I’ve never measured one myself but I believe they were around 15.1mm. For a bore this wide you don’t need a special mouthpiece with a unique bore like the 1010 does but you may need to find a large chamber piece like an older Selmer if intonation is a problem. If the mouthpiece is causing a problem you will know because your 12ths will be too narrow. Specifically check thumb F and C. If C is flat but F is in tune you need a bigger bore/chamber.
