I ordered a Backun Selmer fit for my Noblet, because the standard fit I tried was extremely loose. It came the other day, and that fit was also quite loose, but less loose than the standard fit. I put several layers of plumber's tape on and tried it.
The one I ordered is a grenadilla 43 mm (the shortest in the Selmer fit). Once warmed up it plays pretty much dead on in tune pushed all the way in. I had a chance to play it in a rehearsal in an air conditioned room and it was a bit of a struggle to keep it from going flat, but it was mostly manageable.
Clearly I need a shorter one for situations where the band might go sharp (or to match piccolos, lol). Here is my question: Is it better to send this back and order a standard fit in a shorter length, then have my tech put thick cork on to make it fit? OR, since I already know this one plays in tune, is it possible for my tech to sand it down a millimeter or a mm and a half to make it shorter? Is that ever done? My concern is that a different barrel might not play so well in tune (knowing that they are all different, even from the same manufacturer).
Thoughts?

Send it back and ask them to make a shorter one with a smaller socket. Backun does take custom requests. If they won’t try asking Fobes or Rice if they would be willing.

Thanks, I will try contacting them about a smaller socket fit. I wasn't thinking when I asked about shortening it. I thought it could just be the wood on the outside, but the inner part would have to be sanded, too, so that would probably be a bad idea.
