I want to recolor the engraved logos on my clarinet. Where do I find the gold "crayon" to do the job? I remember 10 years or so ago I found some at Michael's but today they tell me they don't know what I'm talking about.

What you want for Buffet logos is a Sennelier no. 114 Rich Gold oil pastel. This is exactly what Buffet uses for their bells. But if the logo is not as well defined I’ve had better success with Rub n Buff guilders paste. The guilders paste also seems more durable, though it is harder to clean up excess.

I got part of this technique from the professional facebook group (or someone):
Before using the crayon, rub clear paraffin wax over the immediate area (canning wax). This fills the grain so that the crayon doesn't get in the grain. It helps a lot. I rub it off with a rag. (Note: I oiled the clarinet first.) Then, carefully scrape the stamped impression with a poker (a thick needle spring in a handle) to get the wax and other crud out of the impression. There's a lot of crud that fills the impression, even though you can't see it, and will prevent the crayon from looking good. Make sure the corners of the impression are sharp. You have to avoid slipping and making scratches. Be very gentle, it doesn't take much pressure - it's just skin and dirt. Then use the gilding crayon. Rub everywhere and clean up with a rag. You really have to get all the corners by going in different directions. I keep at it until it looks good. How hard you press the rag makes a difference. If you press too hard at first it tends to get in the grain, and also pulls the crayon out of the impression.
After I tried the paraffin it was actually very easy. It was nearly impossible (IMO) without the paraffin. Without the wax trying to clean the grain was a disaster.
I worked as a gilder. Any kind of fancy art crayon or oil pastel would probably work. You might be able to find them with furniture and restoration supplies. Sennelier should be good stuff. Be cautious about the generic stuff you might find at the average "hobby" supply in the "gilding" section, it might turn green. - The good art stuff they sell is probably fine.

The paraffin use sounds like a great tip. I tried gold Rub N Buff once on an old Bb Leblanc I own and I got a lot in the surrounding grain.

I found a yellow marking crayon for marking lumber at Home Depot. Worked it into the wood with no tools and wiped it clean. It will stand out. When the wax wears off I can redo it.
