 Yamaha YCL-952 Finesse

I have been playing a Yamaha YCL-650 which is more than good enough for what I can do, but recently I bought a YCL-952 Finesse on a whim from Japan. I've been trying to find out a bit more about it, but all I can find is that it was "Yamaha's top clarinet between 1992 and 2003". I wonder whether this was a designation used in Japan only since I can only find Japanese references to it, and these are not that informative. I'd be grateful for any background anyone may have. BTW, it handles very well, and it has a beautiful sound.

Any model number beginning with a 9 is going to be at the very top of their lineup. I've never heard of any other Yamaha instruments in the 90/900 series except flutes and piccolos and that is major league level. They must've only been produced for the Japanese market and maybe not in vast quantities, so it sounds like you've got yourself something special there.

Although model numbers have been replaced by names (SE, AE, CS, CSG, etc) I think they still had a designated model number for the Japanese market as they had previously - the changeover was happening in the late '80s/early '90s when you had things like YCL-82IICS which became the YCL-CS.

Thanks Chris. Your answer confirms my vague hunch of where the solution may lie. I won't spend too much more time on this, but I hope to find out eventually how it fits into Yamaha line-up. In the meantime, I just play it. Incidentally, it came with two barrels: 64 mm and 65 mm. The thumb rest is padded, but not adjustable. Walter
