When Were Stepped Skin Pads First Used?

Although skin pads (including Gore-Tex which are skin pads with a top layer of PTFE) are my least favourite pads, when were they first used on clarinets?

While flutes, oboes and other instruments have used pads made with a covering of goldbeather's skin since the mid 1800s (which is bovine intestinal membrane and not 'fish skin' unless you take evolution into account), they were usually parallel-sided and the same diameter to fit inside the pad cups like leather and cork pads.

Oboes often used skin pads (gradually being replaced by more and more cork pads and a few leather pads over time) which were the same diameter as the outer diameter of the pad cup with the entire cup filled with a thick layer of white wax/French cement (shellac with white pigment) with the pad floating on the surface. They may happen to resemble stepped pads at first glance as the pad is the same diameter as the outside of the pad cup with a thin card backing, but they didn't have the smaller diameter backing of thick card that fitted within the pad cup which used much less shellac.

But when were stepped skin pads as we know them first invented/developed and used on clarinets? Was it Buffet who first used them back in the 1800s or are they a more recent thing? The oldest clarinets I've seen still with their original stepped skin pads from new (and way past their best) were B&H clarinets from the '50s.

I don’t know the answer to your question but I am interested to know what your most favourite pads are.

Cork, leather and some synthetic pads are far better and more durable than skin and Gore-Tex pads.

Hi,
the oldest fisch-skin pads I have found on a clarinet was on a D.Noblet aine, barrelless Böhm clarinet in Bb , I think of the end of the XIX century.

In "The Clarinet" by KROLL Iwan Müller is definitely mentioned as the "inventor" of the new key padding with wool (felt) and intestinal skin, and he is also mentioned in CAECILIA Volume 2, 1825, page 138. LG hinner

LG hinner

I don´t know this book, I´ve got the information from a member of another forum.

Those are just like the old (original) skin pads I removed from a J.T.L. Db oboe. They're not stepped pads as we know with the wider diameter felt disc though, they're just purse pads using skin instead of leather.

I cork padded it.
