I got this in an email today:
"As our rehearsal planned for tomorrow 7th July, coincides with the Semi Final of The European Cup in which ENGLAND are playing Denmark. We have decided to CANCEL THE REHEARSAL and reschedule for Wednesday 14th July."
How pathetic is that? All because of some poxy bloody football match! Who cares? I don't - it's only a game! The whole nation doesn't have to grind to a halt just to watch a bunch of overpaid tosspots kicking a ball around for around 90 minutes. Not to mention they can have large crowds in close proximity at these events, yet choirs aren't allowed to rehearse and concerts can't be held with audiences.
And on that note, what similar lamearse excuses have you had for cancellations?

In the '70s we used to have "rain dates" if our outdoor summer concerts were rained out. Since then most groups secure an indoor venue and the concert goes on (well, not this summer with Covid, no indoor places available). Keeping the concert on the planned date means no conflicts for musicians that may have other gigs that night if there is a rain out. As long as you got all your gigs and get paid.
But no, I've never heard of something being cancelled to watch a soccer...err football game.

I don’t get “football”. I’ve even been to a pro game. I think you have to have parliamentary government, or old civic grudges, or something. It’s not so much the game itself, but the fervor. Nothing we have compares to it at all.

I guy just scored his first goal of the season in his 34th game. He's the league's leading scorer now.

Here in the USA, I've had rehearsals cancelled because of debates between candidates for President -- meaningful enough if you're into politics, I suppose.
Groups that I used to play in that met on Sunday nights did not rehearse on the night of the Super Bowl, whether or not the local team was playing.

Our orchestra had to move rehearsal rooms for the whole winter once because the rehearsal space was going to be used as a hostel for homeless people.
That was quite a good reason really, but it was quite surprising.
The room we moved to was also in a building being used to house homeless people, but they had one room that was available. It was the actual church sanctuary so harder to sleep in.
I think we have a really large number of homeless people here.
I used to play football fairly seriously, and it's much more fun if you're on the pitch then if you're watching. It's really best in the snow.

I heard about the game on the car radio coming back from a day of scuba diving-- I guess somebody here in Nova Scotia cares about it too....

It's coming home!
come on England!
sorry folks, I'm actually American, but lived half my life here in England, and I kind of get "soccer"/ football now. Like anyone would be, we're just happy for a reason to hopefully celebrate come Sunday night. Most nights I'd rather play my horns but there's something nice about this.

chris, I'm Italian ... you can imagine that we have a common discomfort these days, given that the final of this European championship will be between Italy and England.
Whenever there is a World or European football championship, I pray that Italy will leave the competition as soon as possible. This year my prayers were not answered.
Now i can only hope that england will win in the final ... so as not to have to endure the mass delirium of the italians celebrating in our cities.

Any precedence allowed for spectating over participation is impossible to understand, particularly after the hiatus caused by Covid. People who would rather watch a sports event than play music should stand aside for others to take their place (permanently).
