I am trying to investigate different horns. My R13 that I have had for years has developed a crack. I am not very impressed with them new, so I am checking out different horns. What do people think about the pete fountain or other large bore horns. I play in a concert band, and a big band . What brands do you have good experiences with..

If your R-13 was a good clarinet, why not have the crack repaired? As far as combo or big band jazz, my old gold plated R-13 works very well on the many solos I am asked to play. For concert band and symphony orchestra, I use my LeBlanc Concertos. Personally, I am not a fan of the Pete Fountain large bore instrument with its "big" sound--for me, while it blends well with any section, it just doesn't seem to project as well for solos as the smaller bore instruments.

The LeBlanc LL offers many of the same features, without the expensive signature.
The older Boosey & Hawkes big bore horns are sleepers, too.
The Vintage Conn 444n and 424n offer much of the same projection and edge.
The Selmer Balanced tone and Centered tone horns might be the best of the lot, if you can find one.
If you are buying retail, assume more than $1500.
If you are shopping second-hand, you have scads of choice.

I agree on the LL over the Fountain. I've owned both and really like the LL. It has a wonderful, big tone and is great for all kinds of music from classical to jazz. It also has a pretty good resale value.

The LeBlanc Dynamic H has the same bore character as the P F, but doesn't have the extra keys, [believe they are the 7th ring for fork Eb/Bb and ? articulated C#/G#]. I did some minor repair on an H and was much impressed. Still like my [slightly-smaller-bore] L7 for all-around playing. Don

L7s are very popular with doublers.
Also, the Esprit has a bore size of .577 and has a nice, big tone like the L7. They're also an excellent buy because they aren't quite as expensive as the LL and the Fountain.

I have an Esprit in C that's a great little horn. My Bb is a LL. Also a great horn.
