Are there any go to Flaps and Insert combination that is generally considered the best?

The great thing about the design is that it enables you to try out different configurations.
For me with cane, I liked the metal insert being in direct contact with the reed. I toyed with the metal bar(s) for the insert and liked both without and with the thickest one. The thick metal bar gives you more center and punch I think.
These days I play exclusively on Legere European Signature reeds. For these I use the flaps over the insert without the metal bar. And using the least amount of tension (leave the ligature as loose as practical) offers the best resonance. Still plastic ligatures such as the Luyben are by far the best with Legere.

Mine is from back when it was the Eddie Daniels II, but I think they are the same?
Fifteen or so years ago I decided that the thin plate was the best for reasons I don't remember. I lost the thick plate at some point after that, so hopefully I made the right choice.
I always put the flaps under the metal (metal on the reed). It's always seemed better to me, but it's easy enough to try all these combinations out and decide for yourself. I seem to remember the only change that my teacher thought was really worth mentioning was flaps on or off.
Now I use an Optimum most of the time, but if I get the chance to play in an orchestra again I might switch back. The rovner is reassuringly secure during mouthpiece swaps.
