i received a flyer stating that the U.S. Army needs a Bb clarinet. the pay is $32,000 per year. if your would like to have a copy. send me your fax number and i'll send it on. You must be under 34. That leaves me out.

Even my pants size is not under 34, Bob. Sounds like good money (about $17/hour) for a young clarinet player though.............when you consider that meals, medical, travel and even a bed are probably included.
My teacher was with the USMC band and taught at the USMC band school for a combined total of seven years, before he got out and received his Phd. in music. Because I too was a Marine, he has dubed me still in clarinet boot camp..........the idea is that I survived that so I should be able to survive learning the clarinet (you have to have been there, otherwise it loses something in the translation........sorry).

my daughter's oboe instructor is with the us army. What impresses my daughter most, isn't her teacher's superb musicianship, but her several awards from both the us amy and the west german army for markmanship. ;-)

You have to be eligible for the army first. I have too many health problems to enlist in the military. (Really, how is a small disorder going to affect your clarinet playing?)

David,
the way the military sees it, is that you are a soldier (ready to fight - see Beth's comment on marksmanship) first.............no mater where your talent lies. But you have a point.............if you are excluded because of a disability anyway then you are of no value at all. Hence the oximoron (sp), "military inteligence".

If someone is really interested, they shouldn't assume that they would not be selected. Apply, and request a waiver if appropriate. I'd guess that the age limit is firm, but other "requirements" may not depending on the needs of the service.

Nice to know that my membership in the ICA buys me such noteriety, too.
Too bad when they purchased the list of names, they didn't spring for the demographic data.
