Well, tickle my perch, it seems Fish Skin for clarinet pads does exist and would probably have been more likely to have been used back in the 1800s.
Maybe I will be lucky after all, in my quest for an authentic renovation of an 1830s French 13 salt-spoon key clarinet.
The remains of the original pads certainly appear much more translucent and thin-skinned than Kid Leather, just like Fish Leather would be.
So no goldbeater's trade secrets or intestines thanks

That's just the skin of fish that's been tanned to make it into leather just like making any other kind of leather. I used to have a wallet made from what was said to be eel skin, but was in fact hagfish skin and was like kid leather but much smoother.
Kid leather and goldbeater's skin are two very different things - one is on the outside of the animal and the other is on the inside.
Fish leather and so-called fish skin (which is goldbeater's skin) are again two very different things - there's no way fish leather made from the skin of a fish will be as thin and translucent or transparent as goldbeater's skin.

That's still not fish skin nor fish leather - it's goldbeater's skin.
I've seen some old 19th Century flutes, oboes and clarinets still with their original or old skin purse pads like that and they're goldbeater's skin and others with their original or old leather pads which are kid leather.
If it is fish skin, then please tell me which fish it's from and explain the entire process from catching the fish to a finished pad in detail without skipping any bits.
